Got a fine from the Swiss police for doing 56kmh in a 50kmh zone when I lived over there. They give you 5km for free before doling out the fine. So, yep, got fined for doning 1kmh (0.625mph) over the limit. It was only about 8 quid though and they didn't add points, so I'm not going to complain too much.

TBH i couldnt be arsed 2 fight the SP30, it would have cost me a lot more to get a solicitor, court fees ttravel there and back (southend) if it all went **** up 4 me, if u no wot i mean.

they were obviously out to get any1 and every1 that night and were set up for it.

i just wish i was moreready for it at the time, i was still getting over the **** copper stepping out in front of me, if it wasnt for light shining of his leather glove that was held up to stop me i wouldnt have seen him....

makes me laff tho that after the speeds i have done i get done for something so stupid....i count myself lucky

corradoboy.
i 'm with you on this one.
my wife ,who works in a school of 5 to 11 year olds has been party to the "cycling profiency" lady.
this lady came to school to teach the children road craft as she says 70% of all these kids own bikes and 95% can't cycle them properly eg through cones, look out for other road users, or do simple signal manourvres. Scary when you think poor little herberts are accidents waiting to happen. So be very aware out there.
Never mind plods out there nabbing you all for 36 in a 30.
funny old world we live where political dogma rules over common sense.
Please note this is not a dig at the police as i know most of them are pretty pissed off about the "hunt the motorist " campaigns too.But we have taken our eye off the ball!!!!!!!!!!1

iyou got done in Llangollen , you were more than likely done by the 'Arive Alive' van , would either be a white or blue transt van with two small windows in the back , marked up arive alive , with pictures of speed camaras down side back and front , easy to see , if they wasnt tucked off the road , even made special pull in places fo them around this area , usally sit in the dip in acre fair , by the pub with tractor in garden

i got caught by cop holding laser gun in southend front clocked at 32 in 30

they had turned off street lights

WPC was hiding behind a parked car on left side with the gun, officer on the right dressed all in in black and black gloves, no hi vis vest or reflcetors on and stepped out in road in front of me.

i was in my escort rs turbo
Sounds like entrapment. I thought mobile units holding radar guns, or using a radar gun on a tripod, had to be visible and clearly identifiable as police officers? Thats why they always wear the yellow jackets regardless of the weather.

Anyway, if you're out and about in north wales, worth checking

arrive alive

to make sure that you are at least aware of where the police might be.

There was a marked police van with the contents of Dixons in the back of it in a layby at the bottom of a hill on the A59 somewhere near Clitheroe yesterday. The way it was parked, rear towards you, door open, all you could see was black. Hope it didn't get me from along way away. I was only doing aroung 65, but it'll be just my luck.

kevin s - 73mph! That's less than 5% over, I always thought 75-80ish was OK. Ooops.

Suresh - 1kmh over! That must hold the record

evo kid - The van sounds likely given the Arrive Alive FAQ that was in with the NIP, but I didn't see it if it was, which makes it worse really. The stats on the Arrive Alive web site Dave linked too make scary reading, especially if you're a biker (I'm glad I'm not - on the A5 73% of the collisions involving a bike resulted in a death or serious injury)

I think having read this that you have all proved that breaking the speed limit is not in fact dangerous.

You are obviously still alive and have survived the experence so why is the limit set that low or enforced with such little tolarence when you are all living proof of the fact that speeding is safe?

Surely the the point that so many people break the speed limit each year (in fact only the unlucky few are caught) and yet survive with no injury or death involved proves the policy on reducing speed limits and the blanket enforcement of them is wrong and infact is diverting resources away from dealing with the causes of accidents. This misuse of resources by the Police force and Government should be stopped.

As to all the rubbish about feeling guilty if you got caught in a 30 or 40 mph limit, you will frequently find the limits have been reduced shortly before a camera has been installed to reap the benefit of a limit set to low for the road this has even been critised in Sufflok by a Judge i believe.

Just a bit of info for you from a traffic cop.
Gatso does not flash until 34mph.
Handheld radar cops dont work Bank holidays.
Cheers Trev, but the policewoman incident (fair play - no smoke without fire!) - i was done by a hand held laser..... Still the points have come off now

More concerned about the incident this week (not Bank Holiday weekend) - just annoyed that, S0d's Law - if I hadn't have booted it out of the junction, I'd have had some speeding **** crash into me!!

All depends on how much revenue West Mercia Constabulary are making at the moment... Roll on end of the week....

I remember my dad telling me that many many years ago he was coming down a hill through some traffic lights just as they turned amber. Policeman jumped out benny hill style and gave him a speeding ticket for 31 and a half mph. My dad banjoed him one and got a further £30 fine (old money) from the judge as well as the speeding fine.

millband, a bit suss this one, MrsREV has also recieved a NIP for 38 in a 30 in that area from last weekend. Was the location stated on your form Acrefair by any chance? She didn't spot the device used either.

Remember, North-Wales police are headed by the despicable Richard Brunstrom, champion of the GATSO and almost single-handedly responsible for the current anti-speeding hysteria we have to put up with. They have already publicly stated that they are operating a zero tolerance policy towards bikes this year and this device was almost certainly designed to cath bikers out as it's a popular route. While the rest of the coutry's police forces are managing to paint their cameras bright colours, North Wales like to hide coppers in bushes and vans in lay-by's. IMHO, Brunstrom should be removed from his job as I think he's a vindictive extremist.

My advice? Don't sign the form. If you do sign the form, at least challenge the wording on the letter from North Wales as it's illegal. They state that you can't see the calibration certificate for the device and that if you ask to see it, you will no longer qualify for a fixed penalty and must go to court which will almost certainly carry a higher penalty. This is Demanding Money With Menaces according to some lawyers...

43 in a 40. Sometime in the 80's and also got caught doing 79 in a 40 (same week). Raced a motorbike at night. Motorbike had a copper sat on it. Not the smartest move, especially in a cortina

But then, I was 17.

Well I am in no hurry to do most things!

But have been shocked by all the speed camera activity that’s going on recently

So I have been trying out on by wife’s advice DOING THE SPEED LIMIT, I can get quite a queue of traffic up behind me, I really must see what the record is.

No one will overtake me; maybe they think I will floor it up to the next corner if they try it.

Whats your view?

One more thing, correct me if I am wrong.

The speed limits are set by the local councils that have extended the seed limits right out to the village boundaries, the highways authority have placed limits on roads that are accident black spots.

So why do the police get the blame for enforcing the law that the majority of folk want.

You got to ask why the majority of us want speed limits, not why do the police enforce the law!

By the way the nanny state is getting to me…………………….

its come down this:

I worry about being done for speeding rather than causing an accident.

I am a safe driver, always take common sense approaches around schools / unfamiliar roads etc.

But i can be done for speeding for slightly going over the limit by mistake. No yellow card or anything.

It affects insurance premiums, ability to get next car, etc.

All because of speeding - not careless driving or that.

But back to the point - i am more scared of being done (read trapped) for speeding than i am about having an accident.

NotoriousREV - just filling the form out, yes it was Acrefair. My comiserations to MrsREV. I've no idea where the van/whatever was. I'm sure I crawled through Acrefair as it's obviously a small town with pedestrians in it. I'm going to sign the form anyway, I don't have enough dosh to fight it, and I work for a law firm (although not as a solicitor) and can't afford a high profile on something like this.

SCOSaltire - I agree entirely.

Well to put it another way would you rather see speed humps & planters in the middle of the road.

OR

Speed Cameras, your Vote

I know which I prefer, every time.

DON’T BLAME THE POLICE; it’s the council and highways that have set the limits

Slow speed is what the majority of people want, pi44es me right off

i thought most people wanted less death on the roads not slower speeds. everyone moans about going slow. until they no some one who gets hurt or worse. ie 30 is the limit so you should be doing less than that. do you always drive your car on the limit bouning of the rev limiter in 5 gear?

si325i:
You can always change down to forth gear, this is another option.

If you don’t like it do something about it, write to your MP or councillor

Tell them that you are un-happy with the speed limit and find it unnecessary to have it in certain places that are not applicable.

Belly aching on here about it, wont change anything

Don’t get me wrong it pi44es me right off, bl60dy nanny state we live in.

Yup this one gets too me - I can drive up the A9 to where I live and watch many mad overtaking manouvers that are very very dangerous - alot more dangerous than me doing 100mph on a straight bit of juntionless road with no other cars! But I can get done and banned yet these pillocks that pull out ot overtake on blind bends and straights not long enough simply get away with it - until they kill themselves (and others).

Speeding on the roads will be socially unacceptable as drinking and driving.
Best we make sure the speed limits are expectable and applicable.

What does the 50mph speed limit do, lets get that one sorted
If it needs to be 40 make it so, otherwise it should be 60

I spend all my time just sorting out what the speed limits are
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We want 20 40 70 and 80 on motorways, only and put them where they will do the most good and save live.

A mate of mine got done for driving his car too slowly on the M1 a few years back. Police didn't seem to care that he was doing 50mph in 'slow' lane and the reason for it was his clutch had just gone.

Fined £50 and 3 points.
