Insurance for a 17 year old in London

A friend’s son is struggling to get anyone to cover him.
Pug 205 1.4
Based in Wandsworth.
He's getting third party quotes of 2 grand.
Clean license (just passed his test)
Any ideas on who would be a good underwriter?
He's done all the usual Tesco / Direct line thing.

My wife works for a large insurance company. She says best thing for him to do is go through a Pass Plus test as this will earn him an introductory discount with some insurance companies.
It costs about £100.00 to do and is only an extra 6 hours of driving instruction plus a test. He might be able to get funding from his local council if they're into promoting new drivers taking extra learning.
His biggest problem is where he lives. It has one of the highest postcode ratings in the UK.
Hope this helps. Give him my best in his mission to get motoring.

Pass Plus is the way to go! I drive a 1.4 Clio insured with Norwich Union direct, started the policy as soon as I got the car and was paying £1250. Passed my test in January and after advice from Scoobynet did pass plus the month after. Total cost of course was £105 and I now pay £900p.a.

Peugeot 205 models with the 1.4 engine seem to fall into insurance groups ranging anywhere between 7 and 9, which is pretty high for a new driver. The quotes sound about right!
If he wants to pay less on insurance, he needs to buy a different car. I had to put up with a 1 litre VW Polo for my first two years of driving until I could build up some no-claims and some driving experience. That's just life I'm afraid. The 205 he's tring to insure is probably fairly nippy, and may have poor security features, hence the cost.

It's worth looking at Saxo/106's from new with 1-2yrs free insurance.
£5500 for the car, £0 for insurance, sell it on in 2 years for £3000.
Bingo, £1250/yr.
Option 2, buy a £50 non write off. Park it somewhere private or get a scrapper to crush it for you. Don't drive it, but insure it 3rd party only for 3 years and ride a scooter in meantime. Hey presto, 3yrs no claims. My m8 did it while at uni, cheeky g1t!

The free insurance thing sounds like a reasonabe idea if they don't put a minimum age on it - like 18 or 21. Check carefully.
Regarding the 205 - I never understood why it was cheaper to insure a 1.6 litre 309 than a 1.4 litre 205. Both are reasonably "nippy", but the 309 is in groups 6/7 IIRC, not 8/9.
I don't remember what I paid for insurance while I lived in Central London, however I do remember nobody really wanted to insure me at the time!! (Nothing's changed much)

I reckon that's pretty good value compared to my first insurance 20 years ago. I was earning £3,726 and my insurance was £272 3rd party fire and theft on a Fiat 132 That was 14% of my gross salary.
Given a quote of £2,000 today that equates to a basic of £14,000 which is probably not far off the average school leaver today.
Of course my disposable was less because basic rate tax was if I remember 33% !!!!

I don't live in town but my daughter has just turned 17. Insurance for her as a named driver on my 405 1.9i (a second car) is £210 extra pa which I thought was pretty good. Insurance guy told me problem starts if I get a 3rd motor (which I can't afford anyway)which is obviously for her main use - then the $$$ signs start. DL

Thanks for all your help.
Pass Plus test has been booked and it does make enough of a difference to make it worthwhile, just.
But it's still a very expensive exercise.
Any other suggestions welcome.....
