..hypothetical question:
I'm a 20 year old male.
I have no license.
Therefore I am driving an uninsured vehicle which isnt mine although I have the owners consent.
I get stopped by the Police and given a producer.
I fail to attend Police station to produce my documents.
It is now 3 weeks since the day I was supposed to attend the Police Station and I've heard nothing.
..How long before I can stop worrying?

You/they can't. and neither can the owner of the car who has also commited an offence by allowing an un-licenced and un-insured driver take to the road in their car. Eventually this is going to be followed up, and there is no time limit for proceedings to start, just when the police/cps get round to it.

The police have six months to send you a summons, I have been down that road myself a few years ago before I passed my test, And in my experience the chances are that you will almost certainly get a summons, but there is still a very slim chance that you won't.
If it goes to court you will probably be looking at no insurance=6points
no licence=6points
which will result in a ban, how long depends on the judge.

Never stop worrying hypothetical youth, you have broke the law and should repent your sins, its your fault the insurance is so high its your fault that the youth of today are frowned upon its your fault.......you get the idea.
To the back of the class with no milk, they will get you...in the end.

the points and ban will go on record so that when he applies for a provisional licence it will have the endorsments on it which will make it more expensive to get insurance.
He will not be able to apply for one though until the ban has finished.
It might seem like a light punishment at the moment but it will stay with him for at least 5 years, and if caught driving whilst on a ban he will more than likely face prison.

..its for a lad at work
So there isnt any conclusive proof that after 6 months he'll be in the clear?

Our local paper has a similar court case in this week.
Banned from driving already, no insurance, no MOT. 21 years old. Driving an XR3i
He got a 6 months extension on his ban, a retest and £120 fine.
Hardly a deterent as his insurance would have probably been around £1500.

agree with wanted, they have six months from date off the offence to decide whether to prosecute!!! I was in the same situation when i was 16. I was riding a motorbike with no licence, insurance, tax or mot, I tried to say it wasnt me on the bike, i lasted as long as it takes to boil an egg b4 i spilled the beans, own up, it paid 4 me in the long run in court

Don't stop worrying m8
Its not like a NIP & a speed camera
You've just added "Failure to Produce" to the ickle list of crimes & thats for each offence that required documents producing.
Yes, your friend is in trouble too, so make your peace with him.
Your points/ban are allowed on a licence you don't have - against the time you actually get one. So although you don't have one, you still can get banned & if you drive during that time & are caught, then its driving whilst banned - a more serious offence.
What happens with a HORT1 (Producer) is that its logged into the station from which the police come. They check with the "producing" station that an HORT2 has been completed & if not then they issue proceedings wholescale.

Theoretical question.
How do the police know whether the person who was driving is the same one producing?
Say for example you let someone with no license drive your car. He gets stopped, and given a producer, but he conveniently has no ID on him and says he's you, (assuming you're both the same sex). You then take your documents in as required as if it was you driving. How would they know? I'm guessing you wouldn't be dealt with by the same officer that stopped you, although having never had a producer, I wouldn't know. Even if you were, after several days, is he/she guaranteed to remember everyone he/she has stopped?
Or what if you'd left your driving license, (assuming old non-photo type), and documents with the car and your mate showed those, again claiming to be you. Obviously he'd have to be able to confirm details such as address without hesitation, but what steps are actually taken to confirm identity?
Just asking out of curiosity. Enquiring minds and all that...

& I suppose the question is...
"Do you feel lucky, Punk?"
I for one do not want my Ez to be walking along the road when some nitwit, who has not got a licence, insurance etc, loses control, mounts the pavement & makes her a cripple for life
& with all respect to your hypothetical friend Richard, I'm hoping that it does all come on top & then in future, he might treat it as a salutory lesson, takes his test for a licence etc.

Puff, it's not a situation I am likely to find myself in, so I am just asking out of curiosity. Like I said, I've never had a producer, (though I don't expect it will be much longer), so I don't know anything about the procedure.

TVR Gary.........this is truely a good/valid point!!!!!! (I don't even let the tax expire.......wuss!!)
If I were you (him) I'd turn himself in now, from experiences in life getting things up front and in the open will 9 times from 10 benefit you in the long term!
In My Opinion -If you save all the hassle of the Police having to chase you up then you'll be seen in a better light plus you will have cleared you conscience of any worry and can just get on and work towards the date of the (inevitable) Court hearing!!!

Puff, it's not really a hypothetical answer though, as the question is how would they know?
It may be a realistic hypothetical outcome, but it doesn't really answer the questions.
Anyone want to enlighten me?

Has this chap learnt anything from the hindsight of this incident?
I will leave you with a resounding thought:
If you had hit a busy bus queue you would have been paying damages for the rest of you life!!! (not to mention the emosional scars)
Hope you make the right decision

He got a severe bollocking from the lads here and was pressured into getting his license - something he's working towards now..
..its a shame cos he's a nice kid but it seems others he hangs round with are the "wrong" crowd
Im not condoning his actions - infact at the time I said to him if he had hit my car whilst uninsured I'd have given him some serious damage - I hope he has learned his lesson

There's not much chance of them (given those scenarios) finding out, but the signature on the HORT1/2 must be the same as the licence...
So given scenario 1 - friend would have to be able to do that signature, which would be the same as on the HORT1, but different on his own driving licence.
Scenario 2 - well, he'd have to hope he didn't muck up.
However, does your m8 mind taking the rap/penalties (insurance/points) for your cr@p driving? I've got good friends but none that I'd do that for...
