Some new poles have been installed recently. They are about 10m high, all black, thicker than a normal lamp standard, and have an umbrella type shield at the top. Some have a smaller umbrella spouting out the side near the top. No identifying marks, no associated box of tricks.

They do not have any obvious cameras. Now seen in several locations around South Warrington, e.g. Stockton Heath crossroads and the junction of Thelwall Lane and Kingsway South.

Anyone know what they might be?

Sounds like CCTV poles. 'Umbrella's' could be anti climb protection, probably have not got round to install the cameras yet.

Clarification: umbrellas are at the top. There is no anti-climb. Some have been around for 6 months with no additional equipment being added.

Just had these put up im ny town aswell and can confirm that they are CCTV. Their should be a monitoring centre somewhere near by.
I think this means I live in a dodgy area ?

They may be CCTV, however if they are there should also be warning signs that there are CCTV cameras.

They may well be mobile phone masts. I think there is a location plan of all mobile phone masts on some Government website (radiography?). If you can find the site it might give a clue.

Sounds like a weather station with either antenae or solar powered equipment. Used to transmit ice warnings for motorways etc

The mystery is solved. CCTV cameras have now been set up on top of the poles. That contract must have been let about 6 months after the pole installation contract.

Ugly great black poles about the height of a 4-storey building with a little camera on top. No information about who (if anyone) is doing the monitoring.
