Want to get a good headphone amp to go with my Cd player + a new set of cans (Headphones)
ANYONE GOT ANY "JECKLIN FLOATS FOR SALE ???????
thought about the "Creek" amp and the one sold by "Project".
Anyone used the "Hifi world" kit one??
I want a very "open" stage sound.
Cheers

Hello Luke. I've got a pair of Stax electrostatics, and very good they are too. But in all honesty i'm not sure they're a lot better than my Sennheiser Jubilees, which i always seem to go back to. Why do you specifically want amplified headphones?
Btw, do they still make the £10,000 Orpheus cans?! Anyone here owned/heard them?

Luke,
I've got the V6's and very nice they are too. Good bass from them as well. However, they are quite heavy so not for long hours of listening. I would also agree with your thoughts that they are a bit DJ. They are excellent for most electronic music (I use them for hard house and trance) but I don't think they are too good for rock and "live" music sounds quite flat. They certainly do not have the openess you require. Standard Sony sound really, very precise if a little *too* controlled. Also, I haven't seen them in the UK, a mate got mine for me from the US.
For a bit more warmth and more "air" try some of the Sennheisers. I've tried a few of these and they are excellent for vocal/acoustic material and also good for live music.
Cheers

"Problems with cans are that you don't feel the bass"
Thats great!!
problem with most recordings is the amount of compression and distortion in the Bass area.............. Modern bass sounds a bit krap.......... all noise and no quality,

I have a musical fidelity X-Cans amp with some senhiesers - HD560s I thhik. It's a pretty good combo, although the revised X-Cans MkII is supposed to be better than the earlier model that I have. I used to run them off a Marantz CD63 si and a nice sound resulted. I also ran them off the cd drive in my pc, sound was not quite as detailed but still pretty reasonable.

lol
well the headphones i use for work are a pair of 25 year old sonys- bit bulky, but by far the best 'phones ive ever heard and used...sounds bizarre and i get the **** taken- until they actually have a listen to them when im mixing.lol
but i have a pair of sennhesiers also- as mentioned they give a very good sound.
I found the sony 'phones to be a bit lacking in bass.
HD25 sennheisers are quite good
but the only way you will find out what you like is by trying thm out, as its all down to how they suit your ears.

I use Stax electostatics that go straight into my Exposure Monoblocks via the speaker outlets. Sound good, but I never need to use them anymore. Highly recommended though.

You can also get Jecklin Float Electrostatics.
I've never really been keen on having electrostatics right next to my ears. What happens if you give them too much juice and get some "arcing and sparking"?

from reading up on the 'net, fancied trying this wireless model (don't get strangled going to the fridge) that offers virtual 5.1 and better spatial sound ... (AKG Hero 777)

... but not available in NZ

I haven't used them in a while so I just dug them out. Still sound superb.
It's recommended to use them through a quality headphone switcher fed from speaker outlet for max current, not headphone socket on amp (although this still works). I have a QED one somewhere, if I can find it I'll throw that in too. Only downpoint is the thin foam which covers the mesh behind which the drivers are mounted split, so I removed it. Doesn't affect sound though. Yes I'll post. If you're still interested, contact via e-mail.

Luke, many recordings/mixes do sound crud but remember that when you go to a concert or gig the bottom end that you feel (sub sonic) is a major part of the experience. Us producers and engineers only ever listen on headphones to make sure that the headphone mix is ok for the performers, very very few things are mixed on cans. I'm not trying to be unhelpful in saying this, I understand that a good pair of cans can sound better than average speakers but getting the low end may be worth a try by trying a subwoofer in the same room too so you get the best of both worlds? Just a thought! A fraction (a few millisecond) delay on the cans would bring the two in synch quite nicely :-) Naturally, if you're listening to Enya there's no need for the bottom end!
:-)

Can't believe you are considering buying them with out listerning first i went out and bought a set of Grado head phones a few years back and when listerning to the different options it was like chalk and cheese between some sets even by the same manufacturer.

(Come to think of it, actually I have: the lift sounds at the start of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" get them shifting a fair bit...)

Hi Carl!
The Wish You Were Here album is just fab :-)
I was only joking about Enya! Actually, I was at her studio in Dublin a month back and it probably ranks in my top 10 studios in the World, and it's private! Her producer, Nicky Ryan was showing me around and I pointed at the Quad electrostatic speakers and said that there's not much bottom end on them and he said that with Enya that doesn't really matter :-)
Had streach limo take me back to the airport and back to my tiny 2 bed end terrace!!!!
:-)
