got one fitted to my car and been pulled up a few times, not because of the plate though, when stopped they didn't even say anything about it and that the spacing of the letters were wrong.
He even wrote the reg on the producer the way it's on plate(i.e X XXXX )
Dave.

A mate of mine drove around without a front plate for a while and didn't get stopped. He now has a slightly smaller plate than required and is expecting to get stopped regularly

Funny you should ask this...
Decided to stop for a burger as usual after the Hants/Dorset scooby meet tonight. Sitting in the car park minding my own, chomping on my chilli-with-cheese (large of course),watching the pikeys doing reverse donuts in their Metros and Fiestas. In drives Mr Plod and his friend, straight past the pikeys (dust still settling), and stops in front of my car. 'Here we go' I think, getting ready to ask them why they are victimising me when there are loads of spotty oiks being a danger to themselves and others at the other end of the car park (all the time forgetting about my 'not strictly legal' front number plate). Pulls up beside me and they get out of the car. I open my door as they obviously want to speak to me. Conversation went something like this...
Plod: Hi, I just need to speak to you about your front number plate. Is this your car?
Me: Yes
Plod: Ah, Jay - it is Jay isn't it?
Me: Ummmm, yeah?
Plod: Jay, did you fit that number plate yourself.
[Doh! Oh well, they got me! Fair enough, I thought - seems like a nice chap, so put my burger down on the passenger seat and prepare for a lecture and a ticket]
Me: Yes, is it too small? (really, I honestly didn't realise)!
Plod: Yeah, it's too small Jay - it's got to be a pukka sized one. That's ok, keep eating - just nod as I'm talking(!). What we would do nowadays is issue you with a spot fine, 3 points (blah, blah, blah) and as you have a personalised registration then it would go onto a database (blah, blah, blah) and it could be confiscated...
Me: Oops, sorry - I wasn't sure if it would be ok or not - I still have the standard sized one at home, it just wouldn't fit.
Plod: Oh, will that be a problem...
Me: No, I'll find a way to fit it (especially if it means you're going to let me off this fine!).
Plod: Ok then, well we are always around so if you choose not to take this good advice I'm giving you...
Me [interupts]: No problem, I'll fit it tomorrow.
Plod: Ok then Jay, you've got a nice car...(cue some chit-chat about the car and personalised plate)...Like I say, it's a nice car so keep it legal. Good night.
TOP FELLA!
Oh well, managed to get away with it for a couple of months!

Hey Gooner,
I am assuming your an Arsenal fan??? hence the thumbs up! My number plate is cut down to the size of my standard letters. The letters are very slightly offset (italic). So in all my plate is technically illegal, but the letters are correctly spaced and the right size - not had any cop problems with it yet.

Kevin, you are right, a Gunner through and through.
I think I may get my original cut down, so I have correct size letters / numbers on smaller background. The plate is a personal reg number and I don't want to lose it.
Cheers, up the Arsenal for Saturday!

Gooner,
Yes - another 6-1 stuffing would go down very well IMO! My plate is as per my username so its is actually quite small once trimmed around the letters - I have however relocated it to the front of the bumper as opposed to its original recess so the mesh is open to greater airflow. How many letters/number are on your plate?

As a Leeds fan I would just like to add 3-2
How I wished the gooners could have knocked the manc scum down, but the risk to Leeds was to great

I have a small one on my 1998 vehicle...
The one time I was stopped, the police said that it was illegal, and was just measuring it ready to right out a ticket (which isn't any points...) when I reminded him the vehicle was imported and there was no space for a proper size one!
He was a little wound up and started check tyre tread etc

Hi Notorious,
It's a UK car mate but I've meshed the front up a bit and moved the plate onto the lip, like this:
I think a normal sized plate will fit, but will just look a bit pants IMO!
