right then after just watching toy soldiers on telly i decided to go and wage war with a newly found ant nest by the window. normally they dont bother me but now they have found a way in to the front room and with a baby due any day IT'S WAR!!
i've dug down a bit and poured boiling water on them it seemed to work but theres still loads of them so next on my arsenal was a can of hairspray and lighter i know thats not a good idea and the dangers involved but it got rid of a lot but they keep coming.
so any body know of a permanent way of getting rid of them any answer is greatfully recieved

Just get some Ant Powder from Wilko's or the local supermaket. Some of the buggaz are immune to it but I've had no probs.
Tip it outside near back/front doors and over their nests. You'll notice them vanish within 10mins or so.
Tipping beer on em is good cuz the ones that tek a sip end up walking all over the place....

Had an invasion myself in the house after a bit of kitchen rejigging invloving brickwork. Spraying the oxy jif cleaner did the job - found hundreds of the little critters dead the following days, including a big one with wings and they never came back...

Get some ant traps, (little circular plastic pots with holes in the side), and ant poison to put in them and put them along the trails the ants follow. They carry the poison back to the nest and it is supposed to wipe out all the little blighters. It worked when we had an invasion in the kitchen recently.

NOT really for inside the house especially with a abby on the way but neat paraffin is highly recommended. Then as TK says , those ant traps are the biz, they DO work and are safe to use in the house as little fingers cannot get into them. Good luck with the little'un.

Ouir next door neighbour told me you could get shut of them by painting all round the gap between the walls and the ground outside with creosote.
Not wishing to leave owt untried, I did it ,and within 3 days not an ant in the house ,and no more all season!
I do it every spring now.

You could get one of those Venus Fly Trap plants.. Have to say, it's pretty bloody horrible to watch, but the ants get eaten quite effectively. A word of warning though....probably end up chucking it out after a week or so of 'eating', as they're kinda sick...

WOMD is the answer.
You have to nail the nest. All the above will work but you have to wipe out the nest completely. TK's ant traps are good but can be slow. Boiling water is the best way to eliminate the nest once found and then use Sarin or VX, whoops sorry Nippon or any other powder to saryrate the remains.

Hair spray and lighter hmm?
Well you could take it to the next level
Fill the nest with gas, shove a lit fuse in the hole, and then shout out 'FIRE IN THE HOLE' and duck for cover....
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

Nippon powder for dealing with the nest. There is also a spray aerosol which dries like varnish and the ants will not cross. Found this very effective around airbricks and window sills where little ant motorways appear and other solutions are difficult. Will post the name when I find the can in the garage.

Alcazar : Buy in all the creosote you need NOW coz from August it will become illegal to buy or sell in the EU. Yet another good thing gone due to EU beaurocracy (sic).
