Off to New York next week and was thinking about getting myself a digital camera while I am over there.

Are things like this any cheaper over there than what they cost here?

Can anyone recommend some good camera's with some idea of prices?

Thanks

Yes, DCs are much cheaper in America. U can compare prices by looking at websites of US retailers & compare them to UK retailers. There are 2 main problems: warranty & voltage. If warranty is US/Cdn only, then it'll be a hassle fixing it if anything goes wrong. The battery charger may not be compatible with UK mains voltage (although Sony ones are multi-volt).
A good 3.3M DC is the Canon Ixus V3, if u want sth higher-end, a Powershot S45 (4M) or Sony F717 (5M) will do. I think the price for a Powershot S45 from US online retailers is less than 300 quid.
The street price in UK is well over 450 quid.
A Sony F717 is abt 460 quid over there, the same camera from Jessop's website is 700 quid.
Potential problems aside, there's absolutely no reason not to buy a DC over there

I purchased a Titanium MD player in Japan a couple of years ago. Bought a plug adaptor/convertor for the battery charger for about £10 over here. I'm sure you could buy the same thing for a US plug no problem.

If your going to say New York, you will find the cameras are same price or more expensive when city tax is added.

I bought a Olympus C50z at dixons heathrow for £370 (5 megapixel, 3 x optical zoom)

Check out what you want first in the uk, and see if it's cheaper at heathrow or in the states

My bro in law just did this a month or so ago - bought from Amazon in the US and shipped to his hotel - worked out much cheaper and no problems! He's in Edinburgh at the mo, will try to remember to point him at this thread when he gets back!

Florida will be hard to find a good deal. A high percentage of the shops are targeted at the vast numbers of tourists they get. You might be able to haggle but in the end I didnt bother as the saving wasnt great enough to beat a hassle free purchase in the UK.

I will have a look about see what I can find. Ain't too bothered about warranty etc as have friend who lives in Florida so could always send it to her then she could sort out any warranty/repair stuff for me.

When buying a digi cam is the main thing to look out for the pixel size and zoom? don't know anything about digi cam's

Hi Jawa!

Yup, I did this earlier this year and saved over £80 on the best web price in this country. I bought mine from Amazon.com and had it shipped to the hotel and it was there when I checked in. Amazon had the best price, as well as the confort factor of knowing they're a big, well-known operation. Don't know whether I'd have been as happy buying from a smaller website that was unknown to me. The other reason I was happy doing this was that it was being delivered to a 4 star hotel who had confirmed in writing they were happy and willing to do this.

One other thought - don't forget to pay with a credit card just in case it all goes 'orribly wrong!

IMHO the most important thing is a decent optical zoom.

Anything with at least 2 megapixels is good enough for general use, having 3 means you have the choice to take some fine quality pics if required.

I can recommend the Fuji Finepix 3800 (aka S304) - 6x optical zoom and 3 megapixels.

Dont buy anything in the little electronic shops in Miami's South Beach! Total con men - asked me $600 for a wide angle adapter. It was in a nice 'premium' wooden box, but they quickly came down to $200 - clearly still too much for a weird brand! Y'all be careful out there!

Think I will try and get a Canon Powershot S45 as they seem quite good from reading reviews etc plus they are not too big/bulky.

DIESEL: Thanks for that, tried that place and they can do it for $449.95 which works out to about £282. It's about the same on Amazon too.

See what I come back with

After much hunting around I bought a Canon IXUS 400 from Jessops. I found the cheapest price on-line of £356 and printed the page out, took it to Jessops and they price matched. I saved about £90 over RRP in store. Only stipulation for the price match is the site you have seen it cheaper on is a UK site and that the item is in stock.
