DVLA plates prices rocket up

Just been looking at the new DVLA plates for sale ie "53"
now ofcouse this now means you can buy 53XY which seem to be all "auction" but even some crap word like 53RVE ie SERVE are £3599 quid !!!! what a rip

There are 25 pages of ones that spell 'serve' -- surely supply and demand should apply here?
For example, I was looking for one that spells 'Carl'. There are <26 of those (C4RL<something> because you can't have I, Q or Z (IIRC). And before they all went () they were £399.

I got R3FRO for 250 quid last month. The one I really wanted has never been issued and I can't buy it. I just have to wait for it to come up at auction hopefully, J37HRO, and the only other plate I would consider was sold before I got it B1GJP. For those not in the know, my nickname is Reffro, but I'm really a Jethro, and my initials are JP.
