Im not a happy bunny. The tax man has just stung me for about 2 quid shy of 600 notes for one months 'kin salary (as usual). I aint happy as i worked for that money, as do we all. I want to know if there is any way to minimise the amount of tax I pay (legitimatly)

And to all those that say youve gotta earn it to pay it. A big fat rasp in your direction. I work hard for my dosh

BS - If you are a limited company dont u end up paying bugger all ? I mean when I was a contractor years ago with a good accountant I paid about 700 squid for the entire year. Just think that if u didnt pay tax you could have a few nice rare scoobs sitting at BS towers.

My tax is all over the place and I jsut don't know what to do.
Last year I worked for a company where I got a car and claimed expences etc. As of Jan 2003 I have a new job with no car or expences, so you would think that I would be paying less tax, right? Wrong! They are now trying to get me to pay tax on my expences for last year (about £6.5k) I have written to them to say that I am exempt under section 198 of the income and corporation taxes act 1988. Nothing happened. When I wrang them they said that the office that deal with written communications is currently about 8 weeks behind! Do I expect miracles on the 28th of April?
No.

What should I do? Any Experts out there?

Think yourself lucky. I've just had £100 a month rise but ended up £170 worse off.

Looks like Scoob's going to spend a lot of time garaged this month

Cool

only 40% ???? is that all!

try living in Germany and pay 49% on all of your salary not just the bit over 28K

Then any bonuses or certain overtime taxed at 66% then have to pay for your own Health Insurance etc

Cool

600 pounds a month!!!

Is that all? Either your wage is really low, or your tax level is too low. How much are we paying out per month Steve?? Too much. And a damn sight more than 600 notes.

Anyone paying 4K a month in NI and tax must be that well off that money is a trivial thing to them. By my (probabily flawed) logic you must be earning at least 16K/M (based on tax per my wages * tax i specd * 8)= 16 * 12 = 192K/pa

Must be like my neighbour then. He has a new porsche GT2, and the wife has an X5 4.4 with full leather. Some people just have too much cash.

I don't mind paying tax in PRINCIPLE

But when you have bugger all to show for it, and still have to wait on a trolley in A&E for 6 hours before being looked at, it stinks frankly.

An absolute bottomless pit - what DO the government DO with the tax they get? They must get SO much as they can tax taxed wages and then add VAT on it; they tax your interest on taxed wages and tax that when you spend it; they get inheritance and capital gains tax; they get import tax, levies and all the cash from fines. They pocket road fund tax without spending it on, err, roads. There's also HUGE council tax, road tax, National Insurance tax and corporation tax. Director's fees tax and dividend tax...etc etc. They very sickly taxed the euthanasia injection for my dead dog and even take a cut every time you have a protected ****…

By MY reckoning I alone paid over £40k in tax last year - yes £40 bloody k, enough to buy a bleeding school in the Hebrides . A big part of that hammering was Stamp Tax in buying a house mind...talk about hitting you in the nuts when you are struggling to get the cash together to buy a basic 3 bed house…

IT STINKS STINKS STINKS STINKS - GREEDY GRABBING BARSTEWARSDS THAT JUST SQUANDER AND WASTE MY HARD EARNED - OHHH AND MAYBE THEY'LL GIVE ME £40 A WEEK IF IM UNEMPLOYED WHILST WATCHING ME HAVE MY HOUSE RE-POSSESED...

Thanks for that I'm legging it when the right job opportunity arises and having that all paid into an offshore account whilst I watch the waves break from the patio. Go on someone tell me ‘you haven’t had it so good’!

I'm with you Diesel, just where is it all going?

Notice how well off our rulers are now, enormous pension increases, and tax free expenses which are so easy to cheat on like that MP who has been caught at it, not to mention what MEPs get. Incredible amounts spent on entertainment allowances, rebuilding and re-decorating grace and favour dwellings in London, building a special set of offices for MPs and wasting all that money on trees and polishing the bronze facings. All the susbsidised food and drink in the Houses of Parliament, no charge for entering Livingstonia, free trips everywhere in the guise of investigation of things like ecology overseas, which means sub aqua diving in the Indian Ocean as an example.

Then we are told about the unprecedented sums being thrown at the public services and what improvement do we actually see for it all? As much as anything the obscene rises that the NHS Trust managers pay themselves but hide under the excuse of privacy and data protection.

I gather from the news that "3 Jags" has now decided to do nothing about the excessive council tax rises except to say that the councils should not have done it! Sort of thing that shows where the real fault lies.

Of course we have to pay taxes to run the country, but we are entitled to comment if we see gross incompetence or worse in the use of our cash.

Rant off, but I enjoyed it.

Les

There's no capital gains tax on your main residence.

However the scandalous refusal to raise stamp duty thresholds in-line with house-prices (let alone inflation) means the amount of tax you pay every time you move is unbelievable now.

Up to £60,000 nil
£60,001 to £250,000 1%
£250,001 to £500,000 3%
More than £500,000 4%

Inlcude VAT on both Legal and Estate Agency fees and buying and selling a £150K house can easily cost you nearly £2K in tax. Buying and selling a £300K house could cost you nearer £10K in tax alone.
