We have just moved from London into Hertfordshire and now find there are no places at the school I had chosen for my son (yr 3). I have got my appeal date for 9th May and was wondering what kind of things I should be saying, I have a check list drawn up but I`m not sure if they are the right kind of things I should be saying.
We moved here on 21st March and according to the dates I have worked out, with time scales and school holidays my son will not actually start school until after the Whitsun Break. I think this is totally unacceptable and I am going to suggest to the Education dept that a system be set up for `temporary arrangements`. As you will all see that this means my son will have been away from school for 10 weeks.....with no help from local schools, previous school or the district council.........well, I`ve put the education system to rights.....can I have anyone elses comments please....

Are you going for Fawbert and Barnard (Forwards and Backwards)? I went there.
Later I discovered they have some sort of stipend, so if you're a former pupil and go to university (bear in mind this is an infant's school, so it will be 12 years later...) you get £100
PS: we're currently appealing for a place at a secondary school in Bishop's Stortford.

No, we are applying for Reedings.......when I contacted them when we decided on this area they never mentioned that there could be a problem......now we have moved (and it is impossible to get to our previous school).....they now tell me `oh sorry, we have no places you will have to go to appeal`. I have tried all the other primary schools around here and the only one that has places is 2.2 miles away. Judging on the Ofsted reports this particular school is becoming a failing school and as we have just left a failing school I certainly don`t want to go to another.

Sorry -- you said "year 3" rather than your child being 3 years old
I went to Reedings as well -- it was well respected then. What's the other school you've been offered?
Getting kids into education in East Herts is a complete nightmare, because the quality of education is a lot better than Essex. A lot of people move into Bishop's Stortford (for example) so they can get their kids into the secondary schools.
My parents moved from Harlow->Sawbridgeworth so that I could go to a Herts education authority school.
Good luck anyway. I suppose your other option is Mandeville -- can't remember exactly where it is, but IIRC it's in the estate round the back of the 24 hour shop on the double roundabout.
(PS: The fruit and veg shop has been in Bell Street since I was a kid, so at least 25 years )

Carl, the other school is Spellbrook but they haven`t officially offered me a place there.
Do you still live local as we often see a red Scooby parked in a driveway....???

Nope, I live in Bishop's Stortford (silver MY00). Lived in Sawbridgeworth 1976-1986. Always wanted to move back, but there seems to be this big gap in house prices in the 200k-300k bracket. Plenty of 3 beds up to 200k, plenty of 4 or more beds past 300k but nothing in the middle
Spellbrook has been on the verge of closure for the past 20 years -- at least they have a decent teacher to pupil ratio. You do not want to get involved in driving through Spellbrook in the rush hour (hint: they've been campaigning for a Sawbridgeworth bypass for at least 15 years....)
Go on, admit it: you only moved there because there are a lot of pubs...

The Bell, The King ***** and the King George are OK. The one on the corner (White Lion?) is crap. Either the Gate or the Good Intent used to be a "poof's pub". Never seen anyone go in the one opposite the Hyundai dealer (The Bull?). Never been in the Queens Head, never liked the Market House. I understand the Railway Inn is a lot better these days (always used to be a dive) and the Hand and Crown in High Wych does decent (cheap) lunch.

If that red scoob parked in the driveway is where I think it is then it belongs to Scott who is on here, I know this 'cos my sister lives a few doors away
Carl
I went to Fawbert & Barnards too! We used to live in New Street when I was a kid which was in the *ahem* late 60's
