Can anybody explain to me why many drivers put a florescent jacket on the rear parcel shelf. The only thing I can see happening is that it restricts their rear view. Am I missing something here?

yeah, its so then can "pretend" to be coppers.. or at least I THINK thats what they are doing..

Personally I put my reflective jacket / waistcoat in the BOOT if Ive been to a site.

Yes, but only people behind can see it. Then they will drive slower, and not overtake you. Why should you care whether someone overtakes you or not, particularly on a dual carriageway?

Flashing blue lights I could understand, as people will get out of the way

This must explain all the people who sit in the outside lanes of dual carriageways, oblivious to the fact they're holding traffic up - they've just forgotten to put their fluorescent jacket on the backshelf

Some people don't like being overtaken for some reason.Maybe this is a patented anti-overtaking device.
