Colleague set this puzzle
WIND + RAIN = STORM where the nine letters represent numbers 0-9
Other than trial and error, is their any mathmatical way of working this out? figure they'll be more than one solution.
Obviously W+R > 9
algebra ?? 1000W + 100I + etc, etc ?????

You need to be given a number to begni with
e.g. N=6
These puzzles are given to Primary 6 kids for homework.
I did one for my nephew last month.
Can't remember it exactly but it was something like:
roads
+water
______
danger where r=6
There are usually a couple of easy letters and trhe rest are trial and error but as I said, you need to be given a letter to kick off with or you'll be at it for hours.

Ratman got to an equation like that but couldn't see the next step..
Fosters.. So was it Trail and error, a Computer program, or did you use some sort of algebra expression ?

Who cares about rain?? I've found the mathematical proof that women are trully the spawn of satan!
Women = Time x money
but time = money
Therefore
Women = money x money = money ^2
But money = root of evil = evil ^1/2
Hence,
Women = (evil ^1/2) ^2
Women = Evil
