Can somebody give me a number at the inland revenue where I won't be treated like [other word for excrement] when i mention TAX BACK!

All the numbers I've called (4 different ones now) from the website, including general enquiries, have been no help at all. They've all given me another number which is always engaged (or disconnected).

"yuo know that number is always engaged?"
"just keep trying Sir...."

i bet they think that I'll give up after 2 calls (like most people). But they have MY MONEY! and I want to know when I can get it back from them (My p60s haven't turned up yet )

Call your local tax office. When they screwed up some mis-allocated PAYE I paid them, eventually they were really helpful and sorted it all out.

Good luck - you need to speak to the correct office. Once you do get through, I've actually found 'em to be extremely helpful. I've only ever had tax back through paying too much, but they're always pretty good.

The easiest way to get the money back, as was pointed out to me by the IR when they owed me money last year, is when you fill the form in, tick the box which say "I want my money back if I've overpaid you" (or words to that effect). They then do it automatically.

What they will tell you to do is to write in requesting a refund. Yes, they will accept a fax if you are desperate for the money (I was). Once they have that they'll send you a cheque.

For the last few years I've had tax owing back to me and both times they took ages and 'investigated' me both times slowing the payout by 3 months plus each time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they cough up faster this time, I need a new back box!

I do my Self Assessment online and if any tax refund is due, I get it via BACS within a few days. No hassles so far. Oh, and P60s don't come out until after the tax year has ended.

Cheers

PS I've always found the IR very helpful. No crap from you seems to mean no crap from them.

I think they pay interest on overpayments which is both tax free and better than you can get at the building society so all is not lost.

Dan B, not extracting the urine. On the self assessment form there is a box, near where you sign it, that does say tick if you want us to pay you back any overpayments. I didn't ('cos I din't read it fully ). When it got to May I thought where the hell is my money. Gave them a bell, they asked if I ticked the box, I said no so they said I had to write in and request a repayment. I faxed it through and got the cheque, +interest, a week later.
