He rubbed his hands together until they became sore,
With the saw he cut down some trees,

he was trapped as in couldnt move? trapped under something
& after the long wait he got so thin due to hunger that he was then able to free himself
it doesnt actually state he wanted to escape off the island

You're right Jack - that is the standard answer, although there are quite a few answers in here that are equally feasible. Whatever, i guess it doesn't really matter at the end of the day.
