Spam, anyone noticed a sudden surge?

I'm getting tonnes of garbage in the old email account recently. I'm blaming scoobynet as thats pretty much the only place I use this email addy. Just wondering if anyone else has seen an increase in spamming recently?

Don't show your email address in your profile. That may help.

Oh, and I now use mailwasher which I can use to filter and bounce all my spam. Not working terribly well as I still get loads.....

Yes definately. Over the last few months it's gone from say 20 per day to 70/80. I use a word filter which cuts out about 60% but now the viagra ones are coming in as v-i-a-g-r-a and the ***** ones as pen1s. Really pisses me off. Like I really want my kids to read a header about what a girl does with a horse. But I need to keep my e-mail addresses as they are so what can I do? I can only see it rising exponentially.... David

It is annoying....
CloudMark SpamNet really seems to help (although anyone using OXP11 should notice that it doesn't work properly unless you have Beta 2). I find that with some judicious rules and SpamNet running I only ever see 3 or 4 of the 90 or so spam mails I receive each day.
If anyone wants some hints on how to set up some good Outlook rules to filter 90% of the spam, let me know and I'll either email them or put up a webpage with some hints.

Okey dokey. Have a look here.
It's not rocket science, but it'll give you a few clues to help you out. Note that it's mostly geared to people who have their own email addresses on domains - so it may not be particularly relevant to people with Hotmail accounts, etc.
If anyone else has good ideas to help against the tide of spam, email it to me and I'll tack it on the end - we could end up with a useful resource of anti-spam hints and tips.

I'll add one (which I think you already use Mark).
If you have your own domain with a single POP3 box, use a different e-mail address for each website you register on. Then you can track which buggers have given away your e-mail address. Also doesn't 'compromise' your main private address.

Yeah, it's a good one Chris. I often register at sites using the account 'junk@otway.com' which automatically goes into a black hole.
The 'different address for each site' trick is also good - for example, it immediately allowed me to confirm that those to$$ers at itclear.com filched my email address from Scoobynet - since the addy I'm registered here with has never been used anywhere else and has only ever received spam from them. Chuck,
funny you should mention this. I have seen a massive increase in spam, but, it's coming into a few of the aliases on my work account, which has never been anywhere near any bbs of any sort.
Persoanlly think it's some time of the year thing
