Council Tax
#1
got my council tax bill the other day for the coming year gone up sh*t loads
thing is (listening to a debate on radio 2 today about everyone being peeved about it) the guy on there said 'thats nothing, soon the government will be adjusting the outdated pricing brackets, then it'll go up a lot more'
ffs how can they do this?!!, it's not my fault my house has more than doubled in value over the past 5 years.
surely they should just adjust the property values for bandings??, why does the fact that my house being worth more than when i moved in mean I can afford to pay a lot more tax??

For that matter, why does the house I live in determine the demands I place on the police, bin men and so on? Does moving to a bigger house automatically mean I generate more rubbish?

Nope, and that's what the 'community charge' ('poll tax') was designed for. The idea was that the size of the house was irrelevant in relation to use of local resources (refuse collection, policing etc.)
But it went down a treat, didn't it
PS: it was only called a 'poll tax' because you had to be on the electoral register to pay it. The idea was that 'traditional Labour voters' would fail to register on the electoral roll in order to avoid paying the tax. But I'm pretty sure that the council tax comes off the electoral roll?
