Teenage gang forces couple out of home

BY JANE HAMILTON CRIME REPORTER

A COUPLE have been driven out of their home of 43 years after a teenage gang imposed a reign of terror on a city estate.

The couple, in their 60s, were moved from their terraced council house in the Inch after reporting the youths to the police for smashing their windows and breaking into their car.

They found they could barely leave the house without facing a torrent of abuse from teenagers in the street after they reported the vandalism .

Other residents have complained about gangs of youths breaking into cars and houses, brawling in the streets, setting fire to garden sheds and attacking anyone who challenges them.

Police have launched a crackdown to tackle the growing violence in the area, amid fears the youths are carrying knives.

Residents say teenage gangs gather on the streets of the Inch, mainly on Walter Scott Avenue, and run riot every night.

It is understood the couple, who have been moved by the council, were singled out for abuse after the youths discovered they had called the police. Neighbours say the couple faced daily abuse in the street and suffered further broken windows and damage to their garden until they moved out.

One resident, who refused to be named for fear of reprisals, said life had become a nightmare in recent weeks.

"Taxi cabs have had windows broken and mobile phones stolen, cars are broken into - there have been house break-ins, thefts from the shopkeepers’ cars, garden huts set on fire. It’s absolutely ridiculous," he said.

"Just in the past three weeks in Walter Scott Avenue two families have been moved to safe accommodation for their own protection, including one family who has lived there for 43 years.

"A takeaway delivery driver has also been pulled from his car and beaten by several youths. A couple caught someone stealing their car and when the man confronted them, he was severely beaten by youths."

A spokeswoman for the Inch Community Association added: "It’s like a ghetto here at the moment with the youths running riot. It started off with local kids but now there’s kids coming in from other areas. Most of them are about 14-16 and they are out every night. We need to face the reality of the situation because it’s getting to the stage where people don’t want to go out, not just at night but when the schools finish in the afternoon. A lot of pensioners in this area just refuse to go out now. It’s an unbelievable situation."

The city council is looking into the possibility of taking out court orders against the worst offenders in an effort to contain the problem Housing convener and local councillor Sheila Gilmore said she had asked the local authority solicitors to investigate drawing up anti-social behaviour orders, although they could only be applied to over-16s.

She said: "There are probably only a handful of youngsters who are causing the trouble but they are being copied by a lot of the younger teenagers.

"A lot of the older residents are worried about the situation and the council is working with the police and other agencies to address the problems.

"The situation in The Inch is serious but it is containable."

A spokesman for the city council’s housing department added: "We did move an elderly couple out of Walter Scott Avenue and are aware of the problems they faced .

"They were on the list for a medical priority move anyway. However, the move was accelerated by the problems they were facing in the street."

Police Superintendent Graham Sinclair said officers had taken action after rising complaints about violent behaviour from youths .

"Since March 14, additional officers have been deployed in the area, and that includes uniform and plain-clothed officers.

"At the moment, we are operating to a policy that even where there is insufficient evidence to report them [youths] for criminal activity, those of a young age will be considered for referral to the social work department."

Supt Sinclair said many problems seemed to be alcohol-related and there were worries many of the youths carried weapons.

He added police were working with other agencies and community groups on a two-year action plan to deal with youth issues in the Southside . The youth action plan is set to be implemented during the summer when schools close for the holidays.
