Caught at 157mph, driver said he was 'emotional'

link to article about a bloke who shouldn't be on the road
This is what happens when you drive stupidly fast on the roads and you get caught - it get splashed all over the papers. (anyone been done doing 161mph around here?).
This guy was in an M3, and was already banned from driving.

1000 feet to stop my f**kin ****! What do they base these figures on ffs?!
'suicidal' is debatable.
I'm sorry.. yes he should be in trouble as he's done over twice the limit but banning him for life?! wtf is the point of that when he's already been driving while banned? custodial sentance + heavy fine is only option.

this guy is an idiot
but.....
iv'e allways thought that the stopping distances as decribed in the highway code are a bit iffy (as they prob still use the distances required by a ford anglia)
if i was taking my test and the question
what is the stopping distance if you were travelling at X mph
my answer would be, what car am i driving? do i have ABS etc etc.. prob fail thou

Top speed see here: -

Just because Top Gear went at 170 doesn't mean that was the minimum.

At 156.7mph, according to Highway code calculations, it would take 1384' to stop. Let's hope the same 'mathematician' doesn't calculate the fines and bans, otherwise its a lottery
Edited to add 133mph = 1018'

@ P20SPD and GU5,
The top model bmws have an electronic regulator which prevents them from going more than 250km/hr (or 155mph) - trust me on this one

Fail yes for not knowing what ABS is used for , it allows directional control to be maintained rather than skidding straight on, it won't necessarily shorten braking distance.
i expect to be flamed????
but ABS (as far as i know) will also assist in straight line breaking on dry, loose and wet surfaces (not snow) as it stops the wheels from locking up and saves the driver having to 'pump' the brake peddle. no lockup of wheels = storter brake distance
<flame suit at the ready>

@ Steve001, yes this is correct. A locked wheel will in fact produce a shorter breaking distance - under certain conditions, however it is uncontrollable. We did this and many other tests at the bmw training in munich and in arjeplog sweden.

The stopping distances in the highway code are a joke. They are based on stopping distances from the 1960s. However the current trend for people to drive 4x4 off road vehicles forces the distances to be maintained as these vehicles don't stop, or corner, or accelerate. They are good at maiming other people though.
I used to do some CBT training for motorcycles and one thing that we made a point of showing the students is the stopping distances. To get the bikes to stop in the distances quoted in the highway code you have to not use the front brake and lock the back wheel and slide it as far as possible. At 30MPH we could stop the 125cc bikes in their own length. Our advise was dont brake to avoid trouble on a bike , look for an escape route you don't want to be the meat between the car behind you and the one in front.

Hate to be a spoil sport but I know someone that fitted speed cameras and he said that they will get you at well over 200mph. The cameras take 2 photos, 1 with a flash and 1 without. He said over 160 may avoid a shot with the flash but you won't get away without it missing you without the flash. BTW, that was 3 years ago and only 1 in 3 worked. Sure they're much more advanced now. Apologies if this makes no sence what so ever.

@ GU5,
the speed regulator is put in by many of the german auto companies - bmw, vw, mercedes, and audi to name a few. It was a decision to allow their cars to go fast, but not too excessive. The bmw m5 however will go a bit faster, but not much. These engines and cars have full capabilies to do much more - and can be retuned to get around the regulating software...
On that note, porsche have no regulator as it "cramps their style". A GT2 flew past me the other night as I was coming home from stuttgart. I was sitting on 180kph and he was most likely at least 100kph faster... Scary stuff when someone pulls out without looking though.....

we have cars travelling at that speed plus, every day of the week on our motorways so why is it so suicidal then????
the article always says that he drove past a patrol car - so possibly it was a mobile speedtrap and not a fixed gatso. If the police used vascar to track him between two points, theres probably a margin of error in its operation when the target vehicle is moving that quickly.

DOn't know how long it would take to stop, but reaction time of say 0.4 of a second at 160mph is 96 feet. If you **couldn't** stop it within 250 yards / 750 feet I'd be very surprised.

The cameras take 2 fotos. Both must be used as this is what is used to verify the speed of the car. The fotos are taken a set time apart, and the markings on the road indicate the distance travelled in that time, and from that the speed is calculated.
If a flash was necessary, then it would be pointless taking a second foto without one..
Also, Id say that tyres would make more of a difference than ABS in some cases. Ive had some brand new tyres that were absolutely scary. Would have been fun at a trackday, but not on the road..
tread depth is only useful in standing water. ABS is a very useful safety feature in all conditions except snow/ice or loose surfaces, and a locked wheel does not slow a car quicker.
If you are skidding, then grip has been reduced.

A M8 got done for travelling at 'more than 110MPH' past a Gatso (GSXR750). By the second piccie he was well beyond the road markings, so they could not give an exact speed, but they thought it was in excess of 150. Still got banned.

if this guy holds the record for the fastest speeder in britain, how come someone on here got done at 162 in a p1 (remember the post?)
