CDWOW being sued by the British Record Industy
#1
Seems as though The BPI are fed up with people buying cheaper CD's and DVD's from CDwow and other importers.
http://www.courtservice.gov.uk/judgm...ic_trading.htm
As they have filed a joint action against CDwow for parallel imports.
If sucessful I suspect it will only increase the amount of stuff going via Kazaa etc as people are prepared to pay 9 quid for a CD, but not 14-15.

Perhaps they should reduce the price of CDs here and then we wouldn't have to buy them from abroad. CD-Wow has excellent service and great prices. The British music industry can't take a bit of healthy competition.
Are they going to sue supermarkets for selling top 10 CDs for £9.99 too?

That's not good
I can't be bothered to read it all at the moment, but as they are not based in the UK is it not true to say that they are not importing into the UK? The actual importing of CDs is begin done by us (who buy the CDs) so they would have to sue us individually?
I was also under the impression parralel imports meant that they were sourced from within the EU (guess I must be wrong) and those from outside were grey?
I honestly can't see any difference between this and importing a car, most places will put the car on a boat for you, so you collect it from a port in the UK.

I've not spent a penny in overpriced HMV etc for ages - all my CDs have come from CD Wow.
The record industry could wake up, smell the coffee and stop trying to protect their cosy little cartel...

More bully tactics from the music industry to try and keep us paying way over the odds. IMO it's a bloody disgrace.
Considering how much it costs to make and market a CD, even £9 is too much, but £14 or £15 is just a joke.
All hail rip-off Britain.

This just pisses me off!
The only time I buy a record from HMV/Virgin is when there's a 3 for £20 deal on; and they're usually a few years old.
Pathetic!

This really sucks - not only is CD-WOW offering a great service, it is also a brilliant example of how to do online trading. The record companies need to take there collective faces out of their ***** and look at what CD-WOW have achieved - not try and ban it! What is more ironic is that these are genuine CDs made and marketed by the same companies that make up the British Record Industry. Are you telling me that these CDs are sold at a loss in Hong Kong? People don't like being taken for a ride - this is exactly what is happening in the UK. People vote with their feet and buy elsewhere. I sincerley hope they don't succeed.

More here:

"These CDs are genuine but their sale in Britain contravenes the UK's Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, the claimants argue. "

Well i thought i would order some bits just incase they get shut down super quick , i mixed up the order and managed to order the same CD twice, and then paid for it, contacted them via mail and received another two mails within 10 mins saying they had changed the order, now that really is WOW ! fingers crossed they dont stop selling, would be a shame.

If they're not based in the UK, then they cannot be shut.
CDs in Hong Kong are not sold at a loss, everybody gets a piece of the pie. I think this is called price discrimination, companies will charge whatever that market can bear. The availability of pirated goods in HK means prices of genuine stuff have to come down to a reasonable level, for example, genuine DVDs of HK movies cost abt 3 quid each.

Clarence - my point exactly. If CD WOW are managing to sell chart CDs for 8.99 incl P&P and ship them half way round the world AND make a profit - sounds to me that someone in the UK is profiteering (sp?) hmmmm

I think part of the reason maybe due to the dominance of HMV & Virgin in the UK. They form the duopoly that controls the UK retail CD/DVD market. I think they may have fixed prices with record companies to maximise profits.
In Hong Kong, individual small shops dominate the retail market (online shopping hasn't really taken off here), so there's a lot of competition. The widespread availability of pirated CDs over the border in China means genuine CDs in HK does not command high prices.

I have noticed that if small shops pop up ofering CD's for 8.99 etc then they don't last for long. My theory is that HMV and Virgin send the 'Boys' around to make them close down.

Its horses for courses.I personally buy my CD's/DVD's from a mixture of Play.com and HMV/Virgin.If you shop around, and watch out for sales then HMV is pretty competitive.I'd never pay £16.99 for a CD,any new release i get from Play, but for older stuff you can get a good deal at HMV/Virgin.They recently had Parachutes for £5.99.
Also i quite enjoy browsing at HMV.
