Why have they doubled in price recently? Not long ago they were around twenty something pence a can, but now they are over forty pence in most places. Anyone know why??

Useful tip. Actually the only difference between Heinz beans and those of any other manufacturer, including the very cheapest tins, is the tomato sauce. That's why your recommendation to add a little cornflour and BBQ sauce makes perfect sense.
Another cheap buy are tins of plum tomatoes. They are delicious yet only cost 9p a tin at Aldi, 15p for chopped tomatoes.
You couldn't buy the same quantity of tomatoes for this price; just heat them up and combine with some of Tesco's Value Bacon at 89p for a quick, delicious meal. The Value Bacon, by the way, is a pack consisting basically of off-cuts; if you pick carefully you will find some really big, tasty bacon steaks in many of the packs.
It's one of the few Tesco Value lines that are real value; all too many are very ordinary products over-flavoured to hide the basic taste.

My recipie for ultimate baked beans is as follows.......
Heat a 9p can of Tesco baked beans in a pan - lots of heat to reduce it by a quarter, add grated fresh parmesan ,a **** of butter and black pepper to taste.
Sorted.......
