Hmmm, yes, good point davyboy.

TBH, I've always found Carphone Warehouse very helpful. Maybe worth asking advice there. Or do a web search for pay as you go sims.

What network was the phone on?

Orange or one to one it will be locked (more often than not)

If not locked buy a PAYG SIM from a on-line store (tend to be cheaper) I can give you links to some once we find out what network SIM you want/need.

If locked then you are stuck to that network and buy a PAYG to suit. (although you could get it unlocked)

Once you have the PAYG SIM you phone up the network and register it, they give you a number and take payment details for when you want to top it up.

Send me the IMEI No of the phone and I'll check and see if its Orange or not.
The IMEI is a 15 digit no. found somewhere on the inside of the phone.

best thing to do is try various network SIMs in the phone to see which work (ask your mates). If they work then then you are Ok to go on that network with a PAYG SIM.
