Summer Toy?

Every Spring I get the urge to spend all the dosh that has amassed on the frontiers of my Bank Account over Winter.
I like the idea of a convertible, again!
The Escort Cabriolet was great, until I sold it to a chappie in Singapore .......... honest to god, he bought it sight unseen!!
Anyway, back to the point, I want a plaything again!!
It needs to be an open top / T Bar type. It must cost the same as I can sell it for in 18 months time when I am tired of it - so, it will need to be about 5 - 15 years old??
It needs to be covered on Classic Car Insurance ( Escorts are covered from 10 years old - Mazda MX-5's from 5 years )
Any ideas? my friend has just bought a mint Mazda MX-5 1997/P with 14,000 miles on it!!! and I am hooked at the Summer playmobile idea again!!
Help me spend my dosh before the hole gets any bigger in my pocket and it all falls out!!
Pete
ps. Dont say 'Motorbike' - I have a full bike licence and will not hold back when it comes to speed - and I WILL come a cropper .................. anyway, I DO NOT want to be a dick who drives with a High Beam on pi55ing every car driver off big time!!

You could go for something that's a proper "classic": Vitesse convertible, an aftermarket B V8, Alfa Spider, Stag etc.
These aren't massively expensive right now, and bought wisely you should get your dosh back when you sell.
Depends how much you want it to be "drive and forget". How much are the late 80s / early 90s fwd Lotus convertibles now?

Thanks Brickboy, I dont want to buy trouble!!
There is, however, a restored Stag where I work for sale - about £2500 I seem to remember? BUT what would I be buying into??
Alfas - well, I wouldn't give those troublesome cars garage room!
You have got me thinking of that Stag now!!
Any other ideas?

Yep just come up with the perfect car for you! You want open air, you got it, you want a classic, you got it, how about a 2CV, right up your street for an old geezer who admits to not being able to resist speed and power.
One less dangerous old biddie behind the wheel with any sort of power can only be good for our roads

Love the idea of a Stag Pete but aren't they prone to falling apart and not being very mechanically sound, engine melt downs, seizures, one thing guaranteed is they'll hear you coming just like the scoob and you'll have the nurses going weak at the knees with your throbbing V8, try not to go for the red with gold wheels and try to get one with a spare hard top for the winter, they don't look too bad with a hard top and you can use it in the winter, if it starts.

Pete,
I've recently started renovating my Mk1 Golf Gti, trawling thru the VW forums you see a lot of convertable Golfs for sale. U can get fairly modern ones G,H,J etc
so you have the summer cab bit, as well as modern car reliability
and safety.
Cheers

Ps thought a TR3 or MGA would be more your era Pete

Budget??
Hadn't quite thought about that!! Dont really have one BUT it MUST be worth the same 18 months after I buy it!!
I wouldnt want to pay more than, say, £10k on a plaything
Less to buy some fun would be nice though!!

IIRC, your right, but they're only bad at low speed, parking etc.
Does make for nice steering feel at higher speeds tho'
Just think, killin 2 birds with the one stone.. Posin about in the luvverly weather down south, and building forearms and pecs that Arnie would be proud of. I mean how would it look if you pull up next to some sprightly octogenerian, roll down the window and she sees those spindly wee arms hanging over the door cappings.
She'd run a mile in her zimmer

Mileage, well, something that someone else has used as a plaything - so nothing over, what? 50k'ish?
Age? well, I want it to start EVERYTIME and take me where I want to go

The 911's are a fantastic car. The one I had was well over the 100k mark in terms of mileage and when it started and pulled away from cold it felt like a new car, was no issue with it at all. I have heard they are very reliable and if you insist on getting them serviced at a Porsche dealer then yes its going to cost but I never use main dealerships as they are a total waste of money. I always try and find a private mechanic who is an ex dealership mechanic. You get dealership expertise for half the cost
Admittedly I only had it for 4 days so can't speak on personal experience in terms of reliability, only what I have heard about one of my favourite cars.
I can't imagine if you buy one for around 10-15k mark you are going to lose much on it over 12 months.
Might not be your type of motor but maybe worth a test drive in one just to see? They are fantastic fun

Yep, I have 6 Golf GTI's and they all have heavy steering, my current MK2 has coil overs and nice sticky Yokohamas and to be honest if I have to manuever it too much I end up needing a nice lie down afterwards, not like these Scooby Doos I have driven with the finger light Nissan Micra steering. Until 30 mph its effectively straight lines only and when I get in something with PAS I scare myself !
