Hi all,
Perhaps you can help...
Recently moved out of rent accomodation.. now the inventry was done this morning, and a report to the letting agents being prepared by the 3rd party in question.
However, I feel agrieved by the fact it seemed much more thorough than the one when we moved in!
For example:
- minor knife marks on work surface in kitchen
- grub behind(back of) door handle
- slight mark on base of door surround
Now, I wasn't present for this, my other half was.. unfortunately she didn't stay til the end, so god knows what they've made of the fact the tiles in the bathroom leaked in the last month through to the second bedroom (which we reported, which they did nothing about).
Any suggestions on what I could put in a letter to express my concerns? As I'm not paying for wear n tear on a house!
Cheers, Alex

Hi Alex,
That does seemm a little bit petty to me. We rented a house briefly last year and our cat cut its paw outside and then proceeded to walk all over the living room carpet. We never could get all the bloodstains out and got stung for a carpet cleaning bill when we left.
It really depends on the general condition of the house when you moved in. If it was already a tip (as our was), then the agent is likely to be a little more forgiving on the odd chip or knife mark.
I think you should argue that these marks are no more than general wear and tear (ie - of course you're gonna get knife marks on a kitchen work surface!). Generally, unless you've actually broken anything or damaged any of the fittings, you shouldn't have to pay up for minor stuff like this.
hope this helps
