Question

My new phone, a Panasonic GD87, should be arriving early next week.

I've been looking into the best way to get all the 300-or-so contacts (each with several numbers) off my old Siemens S45 and onto the new handset.

But it appears that there's no way to upload the contacts into the GD87 with my LoP (or even just download/upload them) using IrDA. Seems you have to get the USB cable for £25.

Anyone know any different?

Question

Is that the flip top one with a camera? Labelled the GD88 out in Aus.....not sure if the labelling is different in the UK and Aus.

They quoted me AUS$160 for the USB cable!!!!!

Cool

Yeah, it's the clamshell phone with the camera - no idea if it's the same as the Aussie GD88. But the cable's £25 or so in the UK, which isn't the end of the world - but it strikes me that if I've got an IrDA connection I ought to be able to upload/download contacts to/from the phone & PC without having to buy the data cable.

I've had this phone 3 days now. You can't just upload your whole phonebook in one go through Irda. You have to save all your contacts as vCards and send them one by one. This IMHO lets the phone down. I'm getting a data cable tomorrow so I'll have a play and let you know how I get on with it.

Hmmm. As I suspected. How annoying.

Tell you want, if the cable works okay, d'ya fancy splitting the cost and doing a time-share on it? I only really envisage using it once to upload all the data to the phone, and eventually when I get rid of the phone in a year or so's time - and possibly once or twice in the meantime to back up the data during the year...

LOL. I spent just £40 on the GD87, and only shelled out that much 'cos I'm getting half-price line rental (£16 instead of £32) for the first 6 months of the contract. The handset would've been free if I'd not got a T68i for free in the same deal....

Oh, and unfortunately, now I'm not on City rates, I have to watch the pennies a little more carefully.

Thanks. I'll drop you a mail off-BBS with my address.

Not really worried about wallpapers, as I'll have a go at making my own, and as for ringtones, all I want is a simple 'ring ring' one for the few times when I don't just use it on silent vibrate. I hate bloody tunes on mobiles.

Won't get the phone until next week though (Voda are out of stock right now), so no rush.

The ringtones on this model are dire

Will any old USB cable work? I don't fancy shelling out the equivelant of 50 odd UKP for something that is 25 UKP over in the UK!!!!! either that or I will buy one from the UK and post it across, I am sure it will be cheaper.

Why are the ringtones dire? You can use any Midi file or convert a wav.

Sure beats my old T68i for ringtones

I got this phone in the Vodaphone shop last weekend. They transfered all my numbers from my old Orange sim card onto my new one free of charge.

All well and good, but the numbers I want to transfer aren't on the SIM. For a start, there's more than 300 contacts I need transferring (I think most SIMs are limited to 100 or so). But also, I've got several numbers per contact, plus other details (email addresses, etc., etc). SIMs are only designed to hold single numbers....

And also, I want to make sure I've got a backup of all the details on the phone, in case I lose it, etc.
