Sitting in US office, pondering things.
Question for you all. Do you think that your life is mapped out, or is life what we make it?
Do you believe in fate?

I believe things happen for a reason. Wouldn't say that life was pre-determined, but something fab always seems to turn up when life's handing you a bummer.

I believe that life is a projection of your mental state. If you are happy then your life will be happy. If you are miserable then your life will be miserable too. If you think nothing good happens then nothing will.
Thats why I choose the first option whenever i can.

Avril,
interesting thoughts.
Suppose I should 'fess up.
My thoughts are this:
I tend to like the idea that life is semi-mapped out, i'm not talking a straight line from birth to death here. There's a start and an end, and every decision you make you 'branch' from one path to another, kinda like a tree. There are, I feel, specific points/events that are set out, say, getting married, having kids, stuff like that, however, how you get to them could be in a striaght line, or via lots and lots of branching, but you get there at some point.
Weird? maybe, but hey, that's life... (cue Weimaraner in Smirnoff advert - though it's a male dog singing and the actual doggie is a bitch, go figure)

I think nothing is for sure or predetermined, except the fact that you will eventually die. If it werent that way, then what would be the point of doing the things we do?

I believe that Daveyboy has got it on the nose. The path your life takes depends on your own decisions and subsequent actions. The only predetermined bit is the character that you inherited.

Markus ..that's life as the weimaraner lovers say ..lol
I'm with you there is a start and an end..and lots of different routes to take ..sometimes we don't have control over what happens on the routes we take, but how we deal with what happens on those routes determines where we head next, which route do we take to the next step in our lives. If things are mean't to be they will be..when your hand is dealt to you it's up to you to make what you can with it.
But I have to say if there is someone who controls which routes we take you know 'The Big Guy' they are one sick ****er when it comes to my life!!

From my own life experiances my own thoughts are that, Our lives are like a London underground map. Certain major life events are predetermined to happen at different set times for us all. We start off at the first station on the line and how we get to the other end of the line, via different destinations along the way is mainly up to us. But, we can be set off on the wrong track by making wrong decisions or giving in to bad influences and so end up taking large detours which brings us and others nothing but pain, as we have been weak and have taken the path of least resistance or have given into temptations which cloud our otherwise sane judgement.
One of my favourite books is called
With a tangled Skein
by Piers Anthony
which is from the brilliant
Incarnations of Immortality series.

Life mapped out? Now Way... Otherwise Dr. Malcolms work on chaos theory was a complete waste of time.
And as for the religion thing...
If Mr. Big was so bloody marvelous, explain war, famine, terrorism, starvation, peadophilia, George Bush, disease, if he/she/it 'cared' so much and was so 'all-powerful', wouldnt we all be walking around in white robes kissing and hugging each other?
Nah - Life's what you make it. You have no one to blame for the crap days other than yourself or those who have a power over you.
MAk.

I believe their is a path that leads to "the good life" we all seek.
And I KNOW... there are many "other" paths.
Its natural to want to "try and make your own luck"
Real spirituality, lifestyle morality and "big picture" mentality are needed to see beyond what is.
Theres so much more to life than meets the eye...
After 26 years of wandering / searching / not knowing I personally found "life".
I too "saw the light", or should I say The Light found me.
There is only one true light to life, deep down we all know Who that is.
Weird tho' that most wait till their death beds or some terrible event before they begin to see.

Basically you're asking whether or not free will exists or not by the sound of it,philosophers have been trying to answer that one for a long time,it's all down to belief,as free will is bordering on the unprovable <60's>spooky **** maaaan</60's>

I used to believe in Heaven and Hell many years ago. Now I think that you find that right here on earth - you see it everyday.
I think life is mapped out is a rough format with margins that follow closely along side. What we do is play in the 'variance' before making the final mark, if you like.
I do greatly admire people who have faith, and the willingness to follow and the belief they hold.

Howard Storm's book is also interesting - not just on life after death (he was an athiest who had a major life-changing experience)
but from some of the ideas he has (or was told) on what it's all about.
The idea that there's not much direct interference from above helps to explain some of the world's nastier things, and you make your own choices and decisions to basically become a better person and find The Truth about what matters.
What was pretty amazing in his experience were the number of things that fitted with many of the things written thousands of years ago that he was totally against before he died.

Life is not mapped out - i.e. nothing is 'written', as many religious people like to proclaim. If this is true, then there has been no scientifically proven evidence of anyone accurately predicting the future. The challenge is out there... www.randi.org
