Thinking of going to the blackbushe car auction this friday. I'll be going with my dad (whos a mechanic).

But just wondered if theres any advice from anyone? Not sure what car to go after so I'll just see whats there. Should I buy a book, ie parkers price guide.

Cheers

The number one rule is:- Do not buy on your first visit.

Take the time to go to a few auctions, see how they work and begin to understand it. Learn how to interpret the car information given by the auctioneer, and to know what is going to happen. Find out the buyers fees, and assuming the car isn't sold as seen, find out how much time you have to reject a car for major faults, usually one hour.

And the next big rule is, DO not go expecting to buy whatever you like the look of. Big recipe for disaster. You cannot afford to get carried away bidding for any car. You MUST MUST know your budget and know what car you want to buy, and know it value, which means doing some research before even thinking about raising your hand. Remember you are entering into a contract to buy the car if you are bid on a car.

Once you have done the above, then go to the auction, certainly take a partner with you if you are unsure what to look for when it comes to buying second hand cars. Also they can act as a brake if you starting getting auction fever and bidding like a mug.

Auctions are becoming more friendly and welcoming for the private buyer, but you still need to follow the basic rules to avoid making a costly mistake.
