Question

Mentioned to a friend that I had noticed an increasing number of cars with number plates stickers stuck on the end/top of the bonnet. I wondered at the legality of this as the visibility doesnt seem so good to me unless you are high enough up and close to the vehicle?

Is it legal to display the plate in that manner? Can you put a front plate anywhere on the front of a car or are there boundaries?

Off the back of my friends comment I would be interested to know if you do have to have a front number plate?

Actually typing this has made me think he may have a point as motorbikes dont have one!

Are there front facing speed cameras, and if so surely they are ineffective at night when you have your h/lights on?!

Hmmmm. Thinking out loud and would appreciate some education in front number plates

Cheers

Matt

I always thought they DO have to be displayed.

I also thought that they had to be in the middle of the car, but the Evo and the Alfa 147 destroys this belief!

All registration marks including marks purchased through DVLA's sales scheme must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from Her Majesty's Stationary Office).

Rules for the display of number plates are set out in law, briefly these are: -

A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles (with some exceptions).
Number Plates must be easy to read and meet the British Standard.
Lettering should be black on a white plate at the front and a yellow at the rear.
The background surface should be reflex-reflecting but the characters must not.
There are separate requirements for traditional number plates displayed on vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973.
Lettering and spacing must be of a set size.

Could be wrong, but I think they also need to be vertical.

I have got 2 Land Rovers, both of which have stickers on the bonnet and are near enough horizontal. Never had problems though.

Rich

I seem to remember your Lotus having no front plate in France, and Gendarme Pascal taking a rather dim view

Funny you should ask as I am about to ditch my standard number plate for one of the adhesive type ones on the spoiler.

BUT, I have just been on the phone to Halfords and Les Smith and they both said that you can't get these anymore. I think this is to do with a clampdown on number plate vendors and they now have to be registered. To get a number plate now you have to take a photo driving licence AND the log book for the car!

There must be somewhere that you can get a 'sticker' number plate from? Any ideas?

Jamie
PS When new cars a driven on trade plates, aren't the plates usually just propped on the dashboard - therefore this must be legal?

Unless you can find sticky plates that conforms with the British Standards (forgot the exact number), its definately illegal now. The DVLA decided that its not acceptable for some reason. But believe it or not, the law has also changed for the better for some people as smaller plates are okay on imported cars.

It a shame really because it actually looked good on my old car:

I've got plans for my new car using the standard plates and see if I can pull it off once all my life drama is gone..

DVLA says something like "no sticky plate has been found to be legal so far"..

I would guess that any place that makes stickers (places that make logos for companies on stickers, T-shirts, etc.) can make you one. Just tell them the size and the letters on it and they make the colour / size etc. you want. Not sure if that's legal though

We once got a f*cking at work for having trade plates on the dash they "should" be displayed in the same manner as the original.

The police/government/money collecting b*stards are being so arsey about plates now I don't think it's worth the hassle

I don't have a photo liscense, should make things interesting should I need a new plate!
