Tractor,
Based on an UK PS2 IMHO I would say the playback is a good as any £150 player. I haven't had any bad experience when using it........but then again, I hardly use it as I've got a Panasonic player for my DVD's.
All in all, I don't know what you have heard but I'm happy with the PS2 DVD capabilities

I use mine as my main DVD player. No problems other than an occasional lip-sync issue that can is solved by pausing and continuing again. Happens very occasionally.
I've no complaints on picture quality and I have the sound through a DTS setup so sound is no problem either
I'd say try it, if you don't like it, get a stand alone one, but I doubt you will be disappointed.

no problems with mine - colour and quality is good. Lip synch as above. Happens rarely.
Then again now that I have GT3 I doubt if anyone else will get near it this side of Christmas
