Taken from the MCN Website:

"Speed limits are being raised in Italy to improve road safety.

Italian transport minister Pietro Lunardi believes higher speeds will improve the traffic flow, and encourage motorists to pay attention. The change will affect three-lane motorways, with the limit raising to 150km/h (93mph), from January 1, 2004. Lunardi went on to say that psychologists and doctors say people who go faster drive better and are more careful, and that only 9 per cent of fatal accidents were caused by speeding."

Something must be up - common sense taking over in italy?

They'll have to chnage the gearing on their tanks to reach that speed in reverse.

Just goes to show that UK speed limits are way to low and we for once should copy Italy. We prosecuted 2,000,000 people last year alone for breaking the limits they obviously are wrong.

I'm just back from Italy. I spent the weekend in the Milan area. We used the Autostrada from Bergamo to Verona and I would say the average speed of the traffic was 150km/h. Limit is currently 125 iirc. Got passed loads of times by cars easily close to 200km/h. Audi A6 TDi's seemed to be the most popular weapon of choice. Their lane discipline was excellent compared to ours. No middle lane dawdlers. Also didn't see a single speed camera.

Oh and I went here..
