What's up with Chat?

I have never been able to get Scoobynet Chat to work for me. I get an icon in the top left hand corner with the text "connect" in it. There is also a banner advert. When I click on the button nothing happens. It shows "Applet Started" on the information line at the bottom of the browser window though.
I gather other people can use Chat, so what am I doing wrong? I know this has been dealt with before, but I couldn't find anything using search.
I'm using IE4.0 if that makes any difference.

I think Simon is probably right. The most likely cause is (the lack of) Java support. My advice is to go to the Microsoft Updates website:
