Anyone have any Algae stopping tips?

3'x1' tank
Fluval 403 filter
Nitrate and phosphate remover in filter
Lots of air
Water temp of 78 degrees
Full spectrum lighting
Heat spot
One messy Turtle

I remove and replace 5 big jugs of crystal clear water every couple of days but the algae is doing my head in. Should I just suffer or keep looking for a cure?

The Turtle needs UVA and UVB to stay healthy so that's a no-no.

I may go out and buy an algae eating fish, but the turtle will most likely eat it.

Plants? Seems like there's too much oxygen in the tank...

Get some snails!!

Just watch they don't breed!

I have a plec in my tank of assorted cold water fish. It helps but not as much as when I almost quartered the feed that I gave them.

Water is crystal clear with just the regular changes.

(Fluval 4 and under water filtration system with powerhead!!)

Beat that for mods!!!!

Like doug I have a Plec in my tank.

Its grown to about 10" now so depending on how big the turtle is I don't think it's going to eat it.

Tank is always crystal clean. At night you can hear the Plec feeding off the glass.

Nooooooo!!!!!! DON'T get snails!!!! They just release crap and disease into the tank and add no purpose. Ramshorn snails are extremely common but not what you want in a tank.

How long do you have your lights on per day? Try limiting the amount of time they are on to around 7 hours.

a small plec will do it - I'd be surprised if the turtle catches/eats it as, apart from the fact they're very quick with eyes on the top of their heads, they're also covered very spiny. we have a three inch plec that keeps a 3 foot tank immaculate (grow lights on most of the day and plants etc).

why a turtle?

I'm off to the fish shop this afternoon. Plec sounds good.

I like turtles, no other good reason and I definately wouldn't recommend one to anyone else.

Just don't stick snails in the tank...all the do is defecate and spread disease. Loaches or plecs are a much better option.

I'd put money on the turtle to eat any fish or frog type thing that you put in there. Mine certainly did. I had three and they ended up about 12" across the middle of the shells. I had a big tank but they spent the whole night chucking rocks at each other - a real PITA as they were in my bedroom. The truth is that they just get too big for most domestic situations. I had to take mine to an animal refuge when I moved.

I have a loach which is busy little bugger, and works hard to keep the tank spotless. Its an orange one, quite a character too

Snails sounds good. Dog the turtle is already around 8.5" streched out, not sure I want a big fish to feed as well!

Is there a particular algae eating snail, or do they all do that?

Tank is about to treble in size by the way, with filter/air mods to match.

Mickle, lights are on for around 12 hours a day.

Plus no substrate cause he's a mucky pup.

Red face

Unless the plec is bloody good at hiding the Turtle's eaten him already. Got a big one as well!! Oh well, won't need to feed him for a while!!

Thankfully Plecs are very good at hiding
