Yes, I know the car should have been cleaned by the time it came to the leathering off bit but it wasn't. Any safe ways to clean my favourite expensive chamois and get those dirty marks off?

Huh? Both my chamois have dirty marks, comes as natural from shampooing the car with them. Rinse the car down first, get your bucket of tepid water, add shampoo/car bath, slop in the chamois and off you go. Get into every nook and cranny and the chamois is going to turn black.

I usually just wring them out with bit of force and then hang 'em out to dry. The dirty marks haven't made any appreciable difference to subsequent washes, certainly none that I can see.

Or am I missing something in your post or my washing "technique"?

("Technique" is a loose term BTW )

Hmmnnn...
You wash with the chamois? I thought that was a no-no.
Rinse, wash, rinse, chamois?
Anyone else?

Rinse, wash, rinse, chamois to dry off. But it still gets filthy marks all over it (maybe my washing is crap). Just clean it up a bit in soapy water, remembering not to rinse it out (soap preserves the leather), and leave it to dry. If the dirty marks haven't come off in the warm soapy water, they're not going to come off onto your car.

Yes, I wash with the chamois, never with a sponge. Never occurred to me not to use a chamois for washing as I remember from my youth a window cleaner who used to do the houses always did them with a chamois.

To get the water off after rinsing (after the wash) I use a water blade - very fast and efficient.

Cool

LOL @ Carl

Those mop-type things are good for washing with IMHO. Another vote for dirty shammies here. I always rinse it before using tho to get any grit etc off.

Using a chamois to wash the car is not a good idea
Sponge is better the little bits of dirt go into the sponge and not onto the leather to scratch the paintwork IMHO

To wash your Chamois put in washing maching COLD water wash
I once used a hot wash and the shammy disvolved in the machine
I thought i'd lost the plot when i couldnt find it

I use an old towel to wash my car, about 50x50cms does the trick.

A good sponge isn't too bad but think about it...there is much more 'surface area' on a 50x50 towel and also the possibility to transfer a lot more sopay water to the car.

Therefiore, the dirt that you remove will be carried away better if there is plenty of soapy water.

When you are finished just bung the towel in with your next dirty/dark colours clothes wash...

A smaller face-flannel sized towel, works well for the wheels and sills etc.

Use one of these for the roof, doors, bonnet and then it's a breeze to nip round with a leather to finish off.

I never found that using a halfords store to wash the car with worked very well... Those facecloth things that come with the swissol kits are pretty good tho.

Sorry Nick, but it's the other way round - using a sponge, the dirt and grit can get stuck in the pores of the sponge and thus increases the chances of scratching the paintwork. Using a chamois, the drit and grit cannot get stuck in the leather assuming you dunk it regularly to keep it grit free. I use a 10-litre bucket of warm (tepid) water to wash and it gets round the car easily and I'm as heavy on the chamois dunking as I am on the right pedal
