Question

Hi All

Had an interview for a job yesterday, the interview was a stormer and the vibes were really positive, It really couldnt have been too much better.

Also had to do a technical test on PC type stuff, some of which went ok but I didnt blitz it by any means.

How much value do employers put on the results of these, are they just gonna give the job to the guy who A+s the test???

cheers

Andy

Cool

I had one boss who would reject anyone - regardless of how well they did otherwise - if they didn't do well in the technical test. Another friend of mine recently gave a VC++ job to someone who did poorly in the test. My friend's judgement has proved good as the guy is actually very capable.

Personally, I would prefer someone to do reasonably well in the test, but if they are perfect for the job in all other respects, I will quite probably still give them the job even if they didn't do so well in the test. I am more likely to use the test to reject someone I didn't like.

Good interview technique and appropriate questions can normally establish what a person can do anyway. The technical test simply sifts out the real bullsh1tters.

Good luck!

I recently sat a tech-test for a job and got told that anything below 90% wasn't going to be considered.
While rules are rules, I think this sort of archaic method is foolish and really personal judgement at the interview should prevail.

Of course, if you get 5% in the test, then there's no hope !

We used to perform verble technical tests as each condidate would have at least four interviews, one of which is with a senior technical guy. If the person could not talk about the basics and thier supposidly specialised subject then no go.

Ideally it should be used as a check that you can do what you say you can.
If you say you are expert at x,y or z, and mess it up in the test, your justification had better be pretty good or else they will know you are trying it on.
If however you come clean and say, "I am not great at x, but am a quick learner, as can be seen by blah blah" you may be in a better position.
In the end it's all down to how the interviewer runs the show. They will be your boss, so if they are judgemental and blinkered in the interview, the chances are they will be the same when you work for them.
Good luck

ermm, well its all over to them now. There were 3 questions on Novell Netware in the test and I said to them I dont know anything about netware but have had a go anyway- so at least I was honest.................I really reckon its gonna depend on the quality of the other candidates as to whether Im in or out.

However things in my favour, I can start tomorrow if needed, live local etc
