Could use ICQ, its a chatting system that runs on your PC, but it has a SMS addon that appears to be free..

Best bit is that if you send SMS to someone ICQ they can reply back to you on your SMS client... something alot of the free(but dwindling) services can't do

Thanks guys. I tried Lycos but didn't have a week to wait for their web pages to appear. ICQ sounds like a whole new layer of complication to a simple soul like me, and Genie seemed to want to take some of my hard-earned.
So I did a search on my ISP and it came up with this:

The ICQ one is very very good although doesn't work to all mobiles, well worth it for the fact you can recieve aswell.

Got to go with Richard on this :

 

Try genie. Mates use it and say it's good.

Can put people's number in and save it under their name, so don't have to put in number each time.
