British citizens are NOT required to show a passport to go to France.
I just checked on the French customs web site: people coming to France from a country that is a member of the European Union need to show IDENTIFICATION.

You do need a passport, the piece in the legislation about identification is for those nations that have National ID cards. As we don't have an ID card, and before you ask no a driving licence will not suffice, Brits have to use their passports.

You DO need a passport.
As someone else said, you can use a national ID card to travel in europe, but since we don't have one then you need a passport.
One of my mates is french, and often travels back to Paris, he just shows his ID card, no problems...... I must show my passport if I am with him.
I have another friend in customs, works at coquelles(sp?) and they have lots of problems like this.
If you dont have a passport they will send you straight back, if you are in france and dont have your passport then they will not let you back in the UK.

What? You guys havent got IDs?
Not sure what "identification" means, but a driving licence may not be good enough. I suppose that if you dont have an ID, it'll have to be the passport.
So, if you havent got an ID, how do you prove you are who you are even inside your country?

Customs are so efficient you wonder how any of those so-called asylum seekers get through the net!
If it's only one of you in the group without a passport then you could always try hiding in the vehicle - but obviously you're fooked if they find you (or if this happens you could always make out you're Albanian or summat).

Perhaps it's because Immigration Officers are responsible for detecting illegal immigrants and not Customs
