My father was telling me he has signed up with the Telephone Preference Service and all his telesales calls have stopped. What's better is that if you do get called after registering you can complain and the offending company can get fined up to £5K, so it's a good incentive for them to leave you alone. I seem to be getting more and more of these calls these days (sometimes 3 or 4 a night) and it really pi55es me off.

I looked on the Oftel website

I joined the TPS a year and a half ago, and it does work. In less than a month, irritating cold calls in the evening (or any other time) ceased.

Thoroughly recommended!

We signed up for the Fax service at work. Most days we would get five or six copies of faxes asking us to vote on pants subjects. Of course, votes were by fax to premium rate number.

Hardly get any junk on the fax now.

It is a nuisance, and I have always been ex directory... why? Cos I was one of those people that you mention.

Seriously... if they phone, just ask "where did you get my number from" in an indignant voice - don't wait for their spiel. And then say that you rent (they can do no work on the propery if you are not the owner)... and the thing I never understood was why people never hung up - don't be abusive, just hang up. It is easy

Before you start flaming, I should point out that I was fired for not reading the script. My manner was "Hello, I am calling from XXX. Are you interested in Double Glazing". Funny thing was I got more leads than most...

That's what I like to see -- a thoroughly professional and business-like attitude from these people.

BTW I would have pointed out that you can hang up your *own phone* whenever you damn well choose

Talking

Haven't had any of these calls for a while, which is a bit of a shame. If I am free I take great delight in keeping them on the phone as long as possible. It just makes me chuckle.

Once I had the I'm from *** windows but not trying to sell you anything. She was right. After 20 minutes or so I had convinced her that they should double glaze my house for FREE. My wife was in hysterics listening. Poor girl on the end of the phone didn't know what hit her.... shame the line wasn't recorded.

I had a lady on the phone ......

Her : "Hi - I am not trying to sell you anything but I am from ABC Windows....."
Me : "No thanks - goodbye"

Phone rings again...

Her : "I think we got cut off....."
Me : "Nope - I hung up - goodbye"

Phone rings again

Her Boss : "How dare you hang up on her you wan@@@......"

Me (loosing cool) : "I can hang up on you all day long if you like - so you can waste your day or get on with selling someone else some windows - your choice...."

Several expletives followed......they never called again though.

Had a double glazing guy come round a few months back.
As soon as I made it clear that he wasn't going to sell me anything he got really irate - called me several names & drove off in a huff.
His passing line made me laugh..."I earn more in a month than you earn in a year pal"

Er....I doubt it very much.

Guys,

The best way to deal with these is to do what I do.

When they call tell them you're very interested and to explain more about the service. Put the phone down on the side (don't hang up) and go and sit down for 10 minutes.

I guarantee that after doing this a few times you will not be bothered again

If everybody did this they would go out of business because of their phone bill alone. Also the more time they are sitting on the end of your phone, they are not bothereing someone else

p.s. In the unlikely event they are still talking after 10 minutes go and put the kettle on
