I have been approached by an ex-boss of mine to sell his digital video recorders, so I am!! If anyone has looked into these or is currently buying one, let me know and I'll tell you about our product. It's incredibly hi-spec for a low price.

(I'm sorry if this is considered advertising, but I just thought there may be some people that would be interested )

Question

So what is the spec?

VCR implies magnetic tape, but digital implies hard-drive?

How many hours can they record?

Does it include a date/timestamp?

Is it legal in court?

Roughly how much (e.g. GBP100 or GBP1000)?

So what is the spec?
Depends on what you want!!

VCR implies magnetic tape, but digital implies hard-drive?
Hard drive is correct. The images are compressed using mjpeg compression and are then stored onto the hard drive.

How many hours can they record?
Depends on how much storage you have, for example, a 16 input system will store images for 7 days before overwriting at a SIMULTANEOUS frame rate of 1 fps. You can store for longer by adding "hot-swappable" storage to the unit.

Does it include a date/timestamp?
Yes, of course otherwise the evidence it collects would not be admissable in Court. Downloaded evidence to a CD can be accepted by the police as long as the software to play it is included on the CD.

Is it legal in court?
See above.

Roughly how much (e.g. GBP100 or GBP1000)?
Compared to other systems on the market, the value of this unit is high. It is not cheap, but the ease of use and benefits the customer enjoys over shadows the cost!!!

The main benefits of using digital recording over traditional VCRs and multiplexers:

1. Digital recorders have a multiplexer built in so rather than having to buy 2 separate units, the DVR will do both functions.
2. Frame rate is increased dramatically. Instead of very jerky time-lapse recordings, the DVR will record up to 50 fps divided by the number of cameras you have. So, if you only have 2 inputs, you can record in real-time!
3. No changing of tapes which if forgotten could be very serious. There are no consumable costs except may a few writable CDs for evidence gathering purposes. (Pennies now eh?)
4. Ease of access to the recorded media. You can search on individual cameras to a specific date and time within seconds!! No more trawling through hours and hours of tapes.
5. Remote acces over network or PSTN, ISDN etc. is achievable at the touch of a button. Great for connection to a monitoring station or remote site applications.
6. Alarm inputs and EPOS interface is available, as is video motion detection with no additional equipment or software.

In conclusion, digital recording to hard-drive is cost effective, easy to use and install, and has all of the features of a traditional VCR system plus multiplexer, but none of the bad features which people have complained about since they were introduced. We hopefully have a product which will make life easier!

Oh, and I forgot to add that you can also control hi-speed domes and fully functional cameras through the unit with no need for additional controllers!!

Question

Is this a standalone unit (i.e. just plug in cameras and TV) or PC based (such as at http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/digital_surveillance.htm).

E-mail me (as per profile) if the details are too heavy for posting.

Cheers,

mb

This is a complete unit including mouse and keyboard, not just a card!!! That link is just for you to put a card into your PC I think - if I've read it right!!

Our unit has been designed with Security in mind, and as such, even though it works on Windows, it cannot be accessed by the user when working. That has been done to stop user messing with settings and installing screen savers etc. which could result in security breaches!!

Does that answer the question? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?
