Do gangsta' rapper lyrics encourage.....
#1
....the young and/or easily led/niave/impressionable to commit crime or think it is more cool than they otherwise would, and if so what can be done about it?
Now,don't get me wrong i like my music as much as the next man and some gansta rapper tunes with the exeption of the lyrics really are ace (Jah Rule & Bobby Brown's latest & many of Tupac's ...etc )but the lyrics ....man,they are just irresponsible at times ,not all artists in the genre not all songs by some artists but too many and too much airplay on radio 1 etc without even batting an eyelid...WTF??..can people not see the effect here,or just not care..FACT:It is not a question of 'do they have an effect' but 'how much effect do they have'
what do you think..?
(and don't even get me started on drug references)
P.S. I can assure you i am no stick in the mud.

I watched the A-Team when I was a kid...
Now I can't stop jumping my Black n Red van over things.
Also - it was the subliminal messages from my Transformers which caused me to set fire to next doors dog.
Don't be daft.
Music doesn't encourage that sort of behaviour - its a by-product of this type of behaviour.

i wasn't talking about responsible people ,talking about 13-18yr old dope smoking car scratching/stealing ******* who don't know what is right and what is'nt .I don't want to hear of single 'it didn't affect me ' replys, but might it affect the 'week' minded.

No-body ever died in the A-team, and I believe helping people was the common plot there. It even encouraged kids to drink milk.
Transformers? setting fire to neighbours dog? Odd behaviour.

Hang on. some of you are missing the point. it's not music they're talking about but the lyrics. These are influential (although, crucially, it's down to the listener as how they interpret and respond to what they hear) as is a TV programme or writer etc.
I grew up listening to the Smiths, Manics and suchlike and I'd be nieve to say that morrisseys (or richys, nicks etc.) lyrics haven't influenced me. I agree with some stuff and disagree tho. Mind you, he hasn't been glorifying violence/gang/gun culture. He hardly glorified Manchester either.
I don't think that these songs/lyrics should be banned. They are, in many cases, cliched, unchallenging and unintellectual (some are I'm sure but most aren't).

Check this out. Its a page from the sosolid.com message board
(I go on there to wind up the wannabe rudies before you ask)
http://64.65.55.254/ubb/Forum1/HTML/011595.html
basically they wannabe MCs spout off their lyrics and they tell them who they think is best.
You will notice that the majority of the lyrics are about how they are the (if you'll pardon the expression) "baddest muthafuka in 'da hood" and how they shouldnt mess with them or suffer the consequences.
Firstly, this proves that these rappers are influencing the younger generation that violence gets you noticed.
Secondly, as the majority of these posters would seem to be 14 year old kids who hail somewhere similar to Herne Bay, does anyone find this slightly disturbing?
Lyrics like:
"There’s having a joke wid me, as in comedy//
Then theres stepping over, as in mocking me//
If u want to mock me beware of the repercussion//
By each rhyme u should have know which button//
To press, n which one not even to attempt to touch//
So dun even bother to clutch/ coz u know dis much//
I’m gonna swiftly move on wid ma terrorization//
Well not until you fully know ma moral equation//
Yea here it is, dun know whether u understand algebra//
C+CR-R= permanent hell to ya/"
and you have a scene that encourages violence and attitude.
Contrast this with the hardcore scene and MC Storm's lyrics.
"We dont care if you're black or white,
We're not colour blind or a stereotype,
We dont care if you're rich or poor,
Where you live or where you're born,
If you drive a car or you take the bus,
All that **** dont matter to us,
We dont care about the colour of your hair,
Weather you're straight or whether you're queer.
Love, peace, unity, is hardcore ravers ecstasy."
And you have a scene of happy loved up people who are free from prejudice and violence.
Work it out for yourselves chaps,
astraboy.

I was listening to 'Cube the other night, I was so impressed with his lyrical style, I bought his album, my Scoob now runs on 13" white walls with low rider suspension. As a result I can make the front end leap 5ft in the air and can make the *** drop.
I can say it was a good day as I didn't have to use my AK. But I have a stash of Uzi's and Spas 12's if anyone want's some. And if anyone asks, blame it on Ice Cube. Dr Dre told me to do it. Guilty consience (sp) don't may me laugh. Me and the homies were chillin down the 7 11 my bro went and got some Hot Sauce, Little T brought his dog along, the one that has Issues.
(I listen to a fair bit of Rap and Hiphop) Psshhhh

Generally most of its crap anyway, I dont get down to Compton or Inglewood much these days. Its not exactly music is it ?
Remember that ad on the BBC for the urban street music radio show (The one with the R1 doing a burnout), I seem to remember a kid making gun actions along with the music whilst on a BMX, havent seen that ad recently for some reason ?

Instead of asking if they have an adverse effect on the "weak minded" why not ask why the producers are letting this tripe out.
Question: How many cd's for sale now have "Parental Advisory" labels on them.
How much are we being de-sensitised [sp] to violence on tv.
Its not just music lyric. Its all around.
How many parents out there have bought there child a gun or some kind of weapon as a toy. Violent video game ...

sorry but I thought the word queer was a slurr on Gay people
as for the topic I think that every generation has it's vice whether it's punk or Rock or Rap . There are alway's going to be these types of music on the fringes that cause concern to the masses.

Don't forget that videogames are being blames for this too.
It just seems like a cyclic kneejerk reaction, with MP's desperately clutching at straws to explain the rise in crime and trying to vie public support.
It'll all blow over.

It has blown over the Government managed a nice build up on the war front and almost glossed over the video-link summit!
Apparently Rock and roll was the destruction of youth, as was punk and now rap.
If the Government looked at tackling crime then they could leave the law abiding citizens alone and stop that terrible knee jerk they have.
