Out of interest, Does anyone know the rules regarding salvage rights. If in a purely hypothetical scenario, I knew of an old boat that been washed up on a remote beach for years. Could I claim salvage rights strip the boat and build a nice shed from the hardwood?

As far as I know you have to report whatever you've found to the receiver of wreck who then decides on salvage and stuff. You can't claim salvage if there's anchors out for instance. If your boat is in trouble you have to be careful before accepting a tow, as the towing ship can claim up to half the value of your vessel I think.
The big tug (Anglian Prince) is being paid for on a 'standard salvage contract' of $2 per day per horsepower of the tug + lubricants and out-of-pocket expenses. It has 11,000 horsepower! Allegedly they might ry to get it off on thursday, look at www.thisisguernsey.com for latest news.

The rule of the sea is that if you are in trouble or sinking (obviously alot more trouble) you should always throw a line first to your rescuer otherwise they can claim salvage.
I haven't heard of this happening in the last 30 years or so but as far as i know this is still law (cue pedants to correct me)
You'd have to be a complete B*****d to claim salvage from some poor sod who was about to sink otherwise lifeboatmen would have their own marinas full of boats (and the odd lilo probably).

Salvage law - just type it into google!
Generally speaking the RNLI don't bother about salvage unless they have been put in danger unnecessarily, ie. if you go out in a seaworthy boat and your engine breaks down there's no problem. If you go out drunk in an 18ft speedboat without nav lights at night they get pissed off!! Recently a drunken 18yr old girl was walking home from town over here and thought she'd save herself from walking round a bay by 'borrowing' a dinghy and rowing across it. Halfway across she realised that the was getting nowhere and called 999 on her mobile. The police, lifeboat and harbour staff were called out 'cos she told them there was a guy with her that fell overboard! She was taken to court and fined about £2k to be split between the emergency services involved. Stupid cow

They might try to pull it off on thursday.

It doesn't fall over because it has a very wide flat bottom. I would have taken it home to play with in the bath but I don't have a towbar or room on the roofrack.
