Be interested to know if anyone has been done for speeding by the Helicopter. I have just seen it hovering over the A24 by Horsham, about 100ft over the road. At the next roundabout there was a marked police volvo parked up.

Whats the bet the helicopter was recording sppeds and the Volvo stopping the drivers?

How can you record speeds from a moving helicoper? And don't say 'hover' as you can't know you've got a ground speed of exactly zero. I know you can use GPS, static vs dynamic pressure (probably not at low speeds, though) etc. but it's not like a police car, which if on the ground with brakes on is definitely stationary.

Time the car over a measured distance?

Various forces have been know to use choppers or light fixed wing aircraft for this. Derbyshire Police used a plane to patrol the Cat and Fiddle for a while.

Carl:

I thought they just timed you between a fixed distance, the same as when a Police car is following you.

Then your speed is just a calculation based on distance and time taken.

Steve.

You use Vascar which records the time taken for a car to travel over a known distance, and calculates its average speed. That's one reason why they have the big white blobs painted on the motorways, they are there for the helicopters aswell as traffic cars to use.

After all helicopters are sooooo cheap to run aren't they ?

To save my bloodpressure, I'll take the charitable view and assume they were looking for someone in particular....
