Yes it is true. Tesco's are selling the Warfedale DVD750 player for £ 179.00. The reviews in two mags rated it the best performance for under £ 500.00. I find the picture and audio quality very good.

It plays DVD's from any region. This is a FACT - I have just bought a Region 1 (USA & Canada) from Amazon.com - put it in the machine with the tray out, entered a 4 digit code on the remote and it plays - The quality is outstanding.

It is a easy as 0-1-2-3 - play.

I am chuffed as a chuffed thing. The DVD's in the states are 40% approx cheaper thabn UK, they tend to get releases far in advance of the UK although i understand this will change (yeh, when hell freezes over).

You've got to a Dolby Digital amp as well. The sound is brill, skill, wicked (and other silly words from the 80's)

I've got a 750 as well and agree that they are excellent. Apparently there are two models, the 750 and 750s. The 's' version is the newwer of the 2 and uses a different chip, which means it can overcome some problems that the plain 750 has, for example:

Jaws 25th Aniversiary Edition freezes on universal logo

Matrix freezes when playing in 'white rabbit' mode.

My 750 does not have these problems, which leads me to belive that it's an 's' but the box or the machine does not state this.

Oh, and althought it's not documented, it does support DTS as well as Dolby Digital. Which is nice.

Best 179.99 quid I've ever spent (well, apart from bying the scooby!)

All I've got to do now is to dump my Dolby Prologic amp and get a DTS and Dolby Digital one!

Geezer i work with bought one. Multi region does work he confirms too.

Crafty sod took his original back and swapped it for an "S", because the original drive made a noise in the quiet bits.

The "S" also plays MP3, he has tried it!

The problem with the 750S is that it decodes everything into region 0 not region 1, 2 etc. This means that it cannot play some of the up and coming region 1 discs like Perfect Storm and the Patriot because the software on the disc is setup to specifically check for region 1 if it doesn't find it then it won't play. (NOT GOOD)

Region 2 DVD releases are starting to come in line with Region 1 release, for example:

Jurassic ParkLost World was released on the same day in the UK and US. Men in Black was released here first and the soon to be available Gladiator will also be available in the UK and US on the same day. It's getting better

We still only have a fraction of region 2 discs that exist as region 1. Also quite often the region 1 discs have better extras on them.

I was in the US in August and bought the following from a music shop (called the Wiz) in New Jersey:

The Matrix - $12
Romeo must Die - $14
Galaxy Quest - $10

'm not going to start anything on 'rip-off Britain' but that did **** me off - the sheer scale of the difference in prices.

I agree with AWD it really pisses me off too. Another thing that gets on my **** is the lack of Region 2 DTS titles....The first one is going to be Gladiator and I bet because it is DTS we only get half the extra's that the good ole US of A get.

I suppose we should be thankful that Region 2 covers both the UK and Japan. That way all region 2 machines have to be PAL and NTSC compatible - and hence when chipped (or hacked) they have no problems with both US and UK discs.

...grateful for that and the amount of mail order DVDs we can get from the US of A.

It's better than nothing...

Actually we get the same extras(2 disk version) as the US one. The only difference is, is that the DTS soundtrack in the us is 6:1 rather than 5:1. By all accounts, unless you have a very large room the extra rear center speaker makes little differences.

Question

I am now poorer and confused! I have just gone out and bought the fabled machine from Tesco's but it says in the instruction booklet that it will only play specific region DVD's as indicated on the back of the player. There is a symbol to indicate what region(s) it plays. Now mine has a picture with a no.2 in it. From this I am to assume it only plays region 2 stuff but from what you have all said this plays all regions (the reason why I bought this model!). Can those of you who know that your machine plays all regions look on the back of the player and see if yours have a region specified and let me know the outcome. If yours say region 2 and play all regions I'll relax but as of 2 mins ago, I'm a bit uptight! If mine is only able to play the one region, it goes back tomorrow

Hope you can reassure me...

Tim

Tim,

It's a hidden 'feature' Wharfdale can't advertise it's multiregion but somebody 'leaked' the codes required to make it so.

Depending on the model and date of the firmware try

thanks Neil. I have a region 1 dvd coming today so I will try it out. I didn't realise you needed Playstation type cheats to make it work!

Cool

Carl,

White Rabbit Mode is a special feature on the Matrix DVD. In this mode you can watch the film as normal but at certain points in the action a white rabbit icon is displayed on the screen. If you then click Enter you are taken to a mini documentary about how they filmed that specfic scene.
