Get a Sony PC101. Looks cool and works well to boot. The micro cameras (Sony IC, and JVC DPR7) are all well and good, but the features and quality aren't worth the compromise.

I'm doing the same for my wife for xmas.
Narrowed it down to
Minolta Dimage Xi 3mp 3x
Canon ixus V3 3mp 2x
Fuji F401Z 2mp/4mp 3x
Kyocera S3L 3mp 3x
Pentax Optio 330RS 3mp 3x
All have an optical zoom. Canon's is 2x, rest are 3x.
All have 3mp, except the fuji. After reading a review in what digital camera, and seeing sample photos, the Fuji's gone.
The Minolta just doesn't look like a camera that's 350 quid. Cute, but with the internal zoom lens it just doesn't look right to me, so that's out. Silly reason, but it's gone.
The S3L is a bit of a mystery. Can't find a review, other than of the S3, and that review doesn't like the lens or image quality. So that's gone.
The pentax isn't metal bodied and looks like a toy. Cheapest by far, but no audio recording for movies.
The canon, after playing with it, is simple and excellent and really oozes quality in every aspect. Output is good, it's very easy to use, has some good features such as autofocus assist light, multiple automatic focus points, auto iso, auto everying , decent movie mode, and not too many buttons.
So I'm going to buy one of those at lunchtime today

The A40 is a superb camera, and has recently won all sorts of awards. It's not metal bodied, and is quite large compared to an ixus, but the results are very good. There's also a good level of manual control over the camera if that floats your boat.
Shop around and you should find one for around 200 quid. Try pricerunner.com
Cheers,
Nick.

Another Ixus fan here. My mate has the Ixus original and that was quality. The camera oozes quality and is very compact. I will be buying the Ixus V3 shortly. Just make sure you buy at least a 128mb CF card as you will be snapping non stop.
Amazon are doing it for £329.99 with free delivery which aint bad.

If you want a good price comparison place, try here

One of many websites, but I found this to be slightly better than a lot of the others

apples, tell me about it
Dixons are 350 quid BUT include 12 months interest free which is worth 25 quid or so I suppose...
The thing is small, built like a tank and oozes quality whereas every time I actually pick something else up, it makes me think "oh dear".
**** it, I've made my mind up. Ixus it is for her...

Im gonna go down town and get one next week. Dixons deal sounds good if 0% but John Lewis do price matches for online sites and usually offer 0% on everything so if they have one in stock I will get it from there.

does anyone know what mines worth?
http://www.sony-europe.com/mavica/demo.html
The Sony Digital Mavica MVC-FD81 is an innovative merging of PC photography and consumer A/V technology. This latest version of the Mavica lets you capture high-resolution 1,024-by-768 still images, as well as 640-by-480 images and MPEG-1 video all saved on standard floppy disks. Using JPEG compression, you can fit up to 16 high-resolution or 40 low-resolution images on a single disk. In video-capture mode, a single disk can hold 15 seconds of 320-by-240-resolution video or 60 seconds of 160-by-112-mode video, including audio. The MVC-FD81 includes four special-effects modes, six lighting modes, a bright 2.5-inch color LCD, 3X optical zooming, and built-in audio recording. But the MVC-FD81's core capabilities, excellent image captures, and easy file transfers are what make it a real winner

Schools love these!
It isn't worth a great deal at all, like under 100 quid, but if you've got a local school that you've got any connections with they love them because the kids can put their pictures on their own discs.

A digital camera that uses floppy disks?!
Sounds ridculous to me. 1.4mb??
Who would buy a camera where the media only holds 1.4mb? You'd end up carying 10s of floppy disks round with you
