Couldn't agree more. Except you clearly didn't read my price specs.
Although having said that, this does look tempting, and only slightly over-budget.

Skin flint.
Get your self the Denon and stop pissing around and wasting time.
I bought a DM3 with the mission speakers. IT REALY IS GOOD. I have the speakers on some top spec sand filled stands and it sounds great.
Enough
Lets not spend any longer on the matter.

Right, want one of these as a temporary stereo now (can't really be
arsed to find the room to set up my full system in the rented house) and then as a 2nd system for the kitchen in whatever house we buy. Basically, I want something that's one up from a portable ghetto-blaster jobbie.
Don't want tape, just CD/tuner - and possibly MD. I saw one at CostCo that had a DVD player in it, but that seemed pointless to me. Ideally I'd like one with the ability to play MP3 CDs, or even with a HDD/MP3 library facility if such a thing exists.
Oh, and cost - definitely don't want to spend more than £200, and preferably under £150.
Any recommendations?

Yeah, I saw the Teac Reference 100 one on the Richer Sounds site. Read a couple of reviews though, and it seems that for the extra score the Denon sounds just that bit better.

Wise words, Luke.
However, you're missing the point. I already have a 'proper' system (Cyrus III+PSX, Arcam Alpha 5, Mission 733s) for the living room. This system is just a little system for playing the radio whilst I cook my lunch in the kitchen. So it doesn't have to be the be-all/end-all of hi-fi kit, but just has to be simple-to-use, sound vaguely good, and look neat and tidy.
Having said that, the Denon looks like it's a goer anyway.

Have you looked into those sound distribution thingies? You'd be able to switch speakers in and out in different rooms. All you'd need then would be a remote for the CD etc
P.S. Junk the Cyrus and buy some proper hifi you skinflint

I just bought my mum that Denon for xmas as she wanted something for the kitchen as well. If it's good enough for my mum, it's good enough for you
Seriously tho, go to the shops, listen and press some buttons and the Denon does stand out from the rest.

However, since we'll be in rented accomodation for the next 4-6 months, I can't really start laying cabling into the landlords' house.

Unfortunately, the number of times I've actually sat down and listened to music properly in the last 3-4 years is probably struggling to get into double-figures, so any expansion I do to the main system will most likely be into the home cinema direction.

This DM3 is what I bought after selling £k's worth of The most amazing sounding Hifi. The Denon stops me from ever spending that much again!!! My original system was better but not for the extra money!!

Cool.
I won't be upgrading any of the kit I currently have. The hi-fi law of diminishing returns means that to get an audible improvement on, for example, the £800 or so I spent on my Cyrus amp, I'd probably have to spend several thousand on that component alone (and most likely I'd not be able to hear the difference anyway ). So the system will stay 'as is' for the foreseeable future.
The only money I'm likely to spend is a sideways movement - perhaps to a more cinema-oriented load of kit (I'm keen on the Kef Eggs - as is my wife, who hates the monolithic aesthetics of the Cyrus/Arcam/Mission kit) or to the whole-house (Naim, perhaps?) system mentioned earlier.
However, there are loads of more important things to spend my money on these days, so I imagine it'll never get done properly anyway.....

I was looking at a "kitchen" system last year and got the Denon.
It never mnade it to the kitchen: its so good it went in my lounge partnered with Audiophysic spark 3 floorstanders and is just great!
Still no kitchen hifi except an old Roberts!
(Upstairs is where the serious hifi is, away from meddling kids and clumsy cleaners, Audionote plus Michelle Orbe spider.)

My TEAC came w/o speakers, so I put Missions with it, and like it as much as the equivalent Denon.
I NEARLY spent best part of £5k on Mission stuff, but when it came down to it, I couldn't bring myself to spend so much on myself. Wifey has now spent that and more on a property in France. Sigh.

Marko, May I borrow your thread to ask if anyone can recommend a similar budget hi-fi but it must have a headphone socket (most do) and a speaker balance **** (most don't). Thanks, David.

Thanks ProperCharlie. That's very helpful.
Luke, calm down. I probably will buy the Denon, but I'll nip over to TCR one morning this week and have a look at one in the flesh, first.
Oh, and yes, I've got a huge amount of time on my hands (for the next 2 weeks, anyway).

Luke - you'll be pleased to know that I ordered the D-M30, plus the Denon/Mission speakers, yesterday afternoon. I decided not to go for the most recent model (since it was 50 quid more expensive and I don't need the CD-R capability) so paid just under £240.
Hopefully it'll arrive before Xmas.
