out if someone has just been married, is there a register etc that holds public data that would answer this question ??like where & when they got married.

Your mate needs to get in touch with the Registrar of Births, death and marriages, I believe. My stepbrother recently looked it up to see if his parents ever actually married as he had never seen any photos of their wedding day, and it cost him £17 for the pleasure of him finding out they didn't
