..need a room to live in ASAP - currently commuting from Basildon to Purley and back daily..sometimes it takes 6/7 hours for the round trip and cost me over 800 quid in fuel last month

Richard/Chris - having lived in both Fleet and mid-Kent, you probably don't want that. It's about an hour's drive between them out of rush hour. Since the journey involves the worst stretch of the M25 (the Chertsey bit) you can at least double that anywhere near peak hours.
