VHFs, CBs, PMRs, i need your advice
#1
I want to establish communication between two cars and i don't know which is the way to go. VHFs need optical contact, i tried a set of PMRs but there was way too much interference with the engine running(maybe the certain set wasn't too good, i don't know),and CBs. Any Suggestions?? The range should be about 4-5 miles.

For that kind of range you will need PBR car mounted units & antenna on UHF. This will also require a license which can be a bit of a pain.
Have a look here for more info.
If you have any further questions mail me as per profile.

ps I have no involvement with the above so don't hassel ne for a banner ad.

I have heard PMR has difficulty at times when in car, and range is only 2-3mls with good line of site.
A set of UK, CB handhelds will do a better job AFAIK but don't know about their legality abroad.
As for a UK licence it's a £10, but it's up to you, as I don't think they'll lock you up without one!

The 6222's are the dogs - I'm well pleased with them - I've got 4 !
Car to car they are great, we use them when travelling in convoy so we're never that far apart that range becomes an issue.
Also, if you're into watersports like us, then there is a great case -
which is specially for the 6222 -
My kids (ages 4&6) use them too. Whenever we go anywhere crowded the kids get one each hung around their necks and they know to use it if they ever get lost. Also really neat when they are out on their bikes - I strap them to their arms so I don't have to yell at them when I want them to wait. We use them when out shopping and get seperated etc. etc. Once you've got them you find more uses for them.........

When we travelled to Catalunya our group used PMR, Handheld and Mobile radios.
Mobile is significantly better than the other options and their easy of use/range make them the one to use for continental journeys.
Handheld cumbersome & dangerous unless used by co driver, PMR v.limited range 1-2 miles especially in car and through mountains.
Point to note:- couldn't get a quality signal from handhelds in a 911

Ive you have a radio amateurs licence, then you should know that the only way you can use a pmr is if you convert it to a licenced band...
Depending on your licence, class A or B...
Most likely choices of band are 6m, 2m or 70cms
6m is a no go really for a car... Mind you can get mobile tri-banders. 2m is better due to range, and aerial size isnt bad.. Quarter Wave 50cms... but cant beat 70cms
I have a Yaesu FT51r Dual Band Hand held from when I used to be into it years ago...We were slightly different and blatently used DTMF Coded Squelch..
Id go for a stalker Gx ?? CB... Expand Every where from super super low to super super hi.. and a 'amplifier'

I got mine from Snow + Rock who were doing them for £50, but it looks like they've stopped now
The list price is £70 each, but street price seems to be £60. If you can't find them cheaper, then Radios UK are very good, I bought some 5522's from there once before. The 5522's are OK for what you want and they're only slightly bigger, I didn't like them because you couldn't lock the volume and my kids kept accidentally turning them down. The 5522's are £90 per pair.
I can bring 'em into London one day if you want to try them out.....

They have worked well for me.. But an external ariel will always be better. Maybe a compact CB unit will suit you, They look well cool and then you can get 20 miles or so.
