I too have been looking for a good quality digi camera within a £400 budget... been searching for weeks to find the best camera I could and IMHO the best one is the Fuji Finpix S304.
Uses the very latest xD media cards has a good 6x optical zoom and 3.2mega pixels etc etc
£338 inc vat and next day delivery form here:

http://www.internetcamerasdirect.co....s304-deals.htm

I'm in the process in seeing if I can get a deal from these for buying 2 camera's cos my mate want s the same camera, if you would be interested I could try to include you in on the deal as we may get a better deal for 3?

Check out all the customer reviews on this camera and also the company . . . camera gets 10 out of 10 from everyone!

Be careful cos there are a lot of "old" models form various manufactureers on offer but the S304 is a BRAND NEW camera with the latest memory cards.

All IMHO but Ive been looking for almost 4 weeks now and this Fuji S304 comes out tops

Try this

I have an older model but it's small and thus very easy to clip on a belt or put in a bag when on hols etc.

Look at the Minolta Dimage X - truely pocket sized and feather weight, 2.1 mega pixels and a 3x optical zoom. Around £300. A new Dimage Xi has just come out with 3.1 mega pixel at around £350. After looking at these, nearly all other similar spec. models seem cumbersome.

Boost, I'm not at all impressed with the Dimage X. A colleague has one and I think the lens isn't much cop - it doesn't have the sharpness. Also, chromatic abherration ("purple fringing") is quite high.

I'm buying a camera for my wife for xmas, and I think it'll be the Ixus V3.

It really depends what you want from the camera. You could pick up a Fuji 6900z for that sort of money if you can find one still, and that would get my vote (that's the camera I've got)

Cheers,
Nick.

Just received a flyer from MorganComputers.co.uk; they've got Fuji reconditioned units at good prices...

Also, it's worth knowing that Jessops price match with certain on-line retailers.

Nothing beats actually playing with the camera to get the feel as to whether it's right for you or not!

Thanks for the tip, Chiark. Couldn't believe how heavy the Ixus is for its size though. I have seen a Fuji about the same size as the Dimage X but no zoom though. I think that having something so small you can take it everywhere in a pocket is the main advantage to a digital camera - so size is pretty important to me (as it were ) What else is out there? - Nikon Coolpix 2500 looks quite funky and is lightweight but also slightly large to fit comfortable in the pocket.

I got a second hand Minolta Dimage 7 from Jessops website. It was £577 instead of £899 and had not been used, as far as I could tell.

Well worth checking out the second hand stuff.

Incredible camera.

Argos have the Minolta F100 on special offer for only £300 (half their previous price), and about £100 cheaper than elsewhere. It gets a reasonable write up as well on dpreview.com

Sounds like you're looking at the same thing as me then

The Fuji that's worth looking at in that range IMHO is the F401Z, but I've shied away after playing with it. It felt too "toy-like" compared to the Ixus 3, but has a 3x optical zoom (ixus = 2x), 4MP output from a 2.2MP ccd (long story that one)...

Loads to choose from. Have a play, and have a good look at samples, plus read online reviews.

http://www.steves-digicams.com has reviews of both the Ixus V3 (called an s230 in the american marketplace) and the F401Z, plus loads of others.

Cheers,
Nick.
