How much do the police get paid?

Advert in my local paper today for recruiting Police officers is saying after initial training a figure of £22K including housing allowance. So go on 16 weeks? training at Henden, then you would be on £22k in the Thames valley.

I met an ex CID man who as far as I new had a fat beemer for himself one for the wife and a poncy 4x4 for the child.. Bumped into him at a petrol station one day while he was driving his f355. In the time I spent talking to him about cars (to manchester and back twice) he never mentiond the Ferrari so he's either very bent or very modest.

A PC in the Met and City of London Police earn £27k basic after training.
But many PCs are taking home around £35k with over time. They also get free train and bus travel for a 70 mile radius from where they work.
Other forces are around £6k p.a worse off and don't have the free travel.

but.. they work during the night and face being spat at, knifed, shot at etc etc... now as a general rule the Fire Brigade are still a respected service so don't suffer this sort of abuse from the public.
I would wager that the incidents of injury or loss of life in the police force are greater.
