Radar Detectors vs. GPS based 'locators'
#1
Folks,
(Help me use the full power of Scoobynet and all that knowledge.... )
I want to get some kind of Radar Detector or GPS based 'blackspot' alerter and have seen the group buy on 'general'
Can anyone offer a balenced view about the two type and recomend ? I can see the difference between the two types, but am unsure as to the 'quality' of the databases they use.
So far I can see the 'Road Angel' and 'Geodesy + Radar' look good.
I also realise they are only an aid to safety etc... before any smartar5es pipe up..
Anyone ?

Radar detectors in the city are a pain in the ****,they pick up everything..traffic lights, auto doors etc etc but i must say if you want one to slow you down, its does a perfect job with it beeping all the time, you dont know if its a gatso, laser or traffic lights
Radar detectors are best for motorway driving and A roads.
So i would say buy a GPS one for town/city and a Radar detector for out of city driving.
Btw i would expect some guys on here will rave about their radar detector but in my 'opinion'(owning one)they are a hassle in town.

I've had a Geodesy for ooo, ages, now. Just checked - got it Jan 2001.
I don't use it around my local town - I know where all the cameras are (at least six each to / from work).
Out of town is when I use it. It's saved my *** in Northampton - SPECS on a dual carriageway, Geodesy going mad but no GATSOs about.

I use a Bell 990i and don't have problems with false alerts in towns as I have turned off the offending frequencies. I like the GPS devices but don't want to rely on a DB being updated. Like ChrisB i don't use it locally, on other journeys especially motor ways I use the Net to check where Specs are sited and drive accordingly.

Bottom line is, you really need both, even though i agree a radar detector can be wearing around town.
My Geodesy has saved me more times than my radar detector, for what it's worth, but then they have both saved me at some point.

Good feedback.... thanks.
I'm more worried about the fixed sites especailly in areas that I dont know. Trouble is a lot of the 'feds' these days seem to use Video based stuff so the radar detectors wont pick these up will they ?
Think I may go with the Road Angel on the group buy. As the Geodesy seems a bit clunky, and from the demo seems a bit confusing with the radar as well.
Think its a bit horses for courses....
Thanks for the help again.

I chose the Road Angel and blinder combo. My reasoning is that mobile radar is being replaced by laser, hence the blinder, and the GPS thingy picks up everything else that's fixed.
So far it's been 100%. I've not tried the blinder yet though, which is good I suppose.

Just to add that IMHO it doesn't matter which GPS thingy you get, as at the end of the day you just want to know where the cameras are. They all seem to do that so don't worry about all the bells and whistles that some try to push.
Rich, you can come and see mine if you like?
